sanityisamyth · 24/01/2024 17:35

Me and Freddy went to the shops

Ect

Loose vs lose

Their/there/theyre

Soooo many. Bad SPAG drives me mad.

OpalOrchid · 24/01/2024 17:39

Their/there/theyre

They're

Fewer instead of less. I've heard this error from BBC newsreaders.
It's in supermarkets with their 'less than 10 items ' aisles. The one supermarket which states 'fewer than 10 items' is in Cambridge, so I've heard. I suppose if they can't get it right, there's no hope for the rest of us.
For those who really want this piece of information:
'Fewer' is for things you can count, and 'less' is for uncountable things such as water.

Waitrose in Ringwood has a sign for "fewer than 10 items". My dad and I had gone in to do a quick shop and I noticed the sign. I was so impressed and had to point it out to my dad (the person responsible for practically beating me into being a SPAG pedant).

RumNotRun · 24/01/2024 17:49

I agree with the ones listed, but also invite instead of invitation and gift instead of give.

Lovetotravel123 · 24/01/2024 18:00

Your written instead of you’re. It drives me crazy because it not bloody difficult to understand that you are is shortened to you’re.

marshmallowfinder · 24/01/2024 18:09

People writing breath when they mean breathe.

Breaks instead of brakes.

None instead of non.

Your instead of you're.

Every single other one mentioned on this thread, too. They're all infuriating in the extreme!

Oh, wow, I'm most impressed, I only ever heard of the Cambridge one.

Aroundthewaygirl · 24/01/2024 18:49

People that make a word plural by adding 's instead of an s.

"I took the toy's away from her."

"I read all the book's this month."

Joolsin · 24/01/2024 18:54

ExplodingZebras · 24/01/2024 17:11

His instead of he's 🤦‍♀️

His playing football after school. 🤨

And, conversely, he's instead of his:

We went to he's house. 🤯

Kazzyhoward · 24/01/2024 18:56

The way that people use the opposite word for lend and borrow.

New2024 · 24/01/2024 18:59

Prehaps and pacific

Also I really don’t like this newish US influenced concept of being ‘exited for’ rather than ‘excited about’

Waterlogged · 24/01/2024 19:02

Apostrophes after ages: "I'm in my 30's", instead of, "I'm in my 30s"

Oh yes, I completely agree. How you can be excited for a holiday, for example, is ridiculous. Holidays don't have emotions.

Greatful

You need a comma after OK.

OK is spelled either OK or okay.

Not a great start, OP 🙄🙄

These threads are always full of SPaG errors. It's quite funny really.

Letsgotitans · 24/01/2024 19:34

Brought instead of bought.

When someone says it, I'm screaming inside.

Aydel · 24/01/2024 19:43

Myself and John are in agreement with you. The constant misuse of the word “myself.”

Tallisker · 24/01/2024 20:13

Phased for fazed.
Breaks for brakes.
Loose for lose.

2Old2Tango · 24/01/2024 20:34

All of the above.

I'll add the use of 'a' before a vowel, eg a elephant, a accident.

Something else that irks me, but I don't know if it's me getting it wrong, is when someone says 'on an evening' instead of 'in or during the evening', or 'on Christmas' instead of 'at Christmas'. I see this so frequently, so maybe it's me who is incorrect.

ColleenDonaghy · 24/01/2024 20:46

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/01/2024 14:58

I think the 'ect' one is a result of mispronunciation. Lots of people say 'eck-setera' instead of 'et-setera'.

I think I was in my teens before I copped this one - I knew it was et cetera, but I thought the "t" in the abbreviation was the t in cetera, not et.

As ever, these threads are full of criticisms of regional usage and dialect that most people wouldn't use in formal writing, but do on MN and FB because they're conversational.

Btw - the less vs fewer rule apparently comes from one person who decided that's the way it should be. There are loads of exceptions, mainly around money, volume, distance etc (one item is 10 pounds/litres/miles less than another, not fewer).

2Old2Tango · 24/01/2024 21:30

Couple of others I see on this site a lot...

People asking for advise when they mean advice.

Using the word 'women' when they mean the singular 'woman'.

Flyhigher · 24/01/2024 21:47

@AllProperTeaIsTheft it's a fair cop! I'm getting old is my excuse. How embarrassing.

I agree. It's everywhere, no-one seems to understand the difference!

Dibblydoodahdah · 24/01/2024 21:56

“a bunch of” (when the person is
not referring to flowers), “my bad” and “ya’ll”.

Yes, I do work for a U.S. company but I’m finding the first two above are becoming
more common in the UK too!
