Moving to Halifax / wakefield

I'm considering moving to one Wakefield or Halifax due to changing jobs. Which place would be better to raise children in and offer better opportunities for education and sports. My son is currently in a football academy and would want to move him to a good one too. We're moving from down south.

Halifax is a grammar area and you have the choice of NHGS or Crossley Heath. Sorry I don't know about the comprehensive secondaries but you need to be aware of the grammar thing as it does impact on comps. I was born and raised in Halifax, although I don't live there now and it is great for links to Leeds/Manchester with all that those offer. Great outdoor sports opportunities too although I don't know about football sorry. It is a Rugby area though and even in the 90s it had women's rugby teams but not football.

@ceeceem sorry forgot to add that it is prime commuter belt for Leeds/Manchester so house prices reflect that. My parents sold their 3 bed terraced Edwardian town house there in 2020 for 380K. No parking or garage.

Skircoat Green/Copley/Saville Park/Manor Heath are the more desirable areas and command the highest property prices. The housing stock in those areas is a lot of terraces or big detached Edwardian/Victorian villas.

In Halifax you are close to Hebden Bridge (rainbow capital of West Yorks) where a lot of media types who work in Manhester live and also smaller villages like Mytholmroyd/Sowerby Bridge and then up onto rural areas such as Stainland/Greetland.
It was great growing up in Halifax as a kid with lots to do.

@twistyizzy thanks so much for the extra information- house prices being quite high… was hoping it would be a lot more less than down south. Good to hear you enjoyed growing up there.

@ceeceem Wakefield may be cheaper than Halifax but I don't really know the area I'm afraid
