I haven't a clue. Not that it is summer unifrom weather yet but DD1, who is in Reception, is about to need a new pair of shoes. Should I hold off until she's in summer uniform or do they tend to wear closed-in black shoes with summer uniform too?

i would choose a pair with a single strap across (mary jane style) to wear with socks. As it gets very warm, sandles but id keep mine in the mary janes for as long as poss as they protect the toes more from jumping kids and bark etc

ours do, as there have been a few accidents of stubbed toes etc with sandels in the summer.

I tend to go for the ballet style pumps with a bar across for better stability, or even clarks doodles. still closed in that way, yet lighter on the foot than the typical 'winter' shoe.

I echo Mary Janes. My DD never wears sandals to school.

Just dont send her in those "jelly shoes". I'm a teacher and lost count of the number of times a child has been hobbling around due to these breaking/buckle snapping etc. Not suitable for school playground!

My dd's school changed the rules last year and they were effectively banned from wearing sandals to school - no open toes or open-heeled . I checked out the 'school sandals' from Clarks but decided that my dd could wear her normal school shoes for school, keeping her pretty sandals for other times. I explained this to her in the shop, and she was quite happy with this -it's only a few weeks at the end of the day.

For younger children, those Doodles sandals are great and I think that they're machine washable too .

Check with the school?
We were definitely told no open-toed sandals, because of injuries/tripping - but those old-fashioned soft StartRite sandals the big picture on this page is the kind I mean are fine.
Dd will be having some like that for the summer term.

mrsruffallo · 19/03/2008 11:20

I was thinking about this today.
I decided it must be their normal school shoes with short socks instead of tights.
I don't think that sandals are appropriate for school.

marialuisa · 19/03/2008 11:38

At DD's school it has to be traditional sandals (as in Bink's link)or ordinary shoes.

Moomin · 19/03/2008 11:45

No open-toed sandals allowed at dd1's school to avoid squashed toes and toes bits getting dragged behind and tripping kids up when they hare round at break. Only concession I've seen to Summer is more blue shoes rather than the black winter shoes

TodayToday · 19/03/2008 12:09

So I could get her some navy blue closed in traditional leather shoes - maybe with some cut out bits for more air to get in.

At our school it is black closed toe shoes even in the summer term because of the playground accident potential.

misdee · 19/03/2008 13:37

not allowed open-toed shoes at dd's school. its enclosed black shoes all year round. in the summer they wear them with white ankle socks, and summer dresses. in winter its tights with grey dresses/t-shirts, or long socks under trousers.

Black or red crocs last summer!

Which was great cause I didn't have to buy new summer shoes
