this isnt a joke, we have had 11 pairs since Sept for ds (5)and I was wondering if they slow down as they get bigger. His friends have the same ones they started with!! I have tried, Tesco's, M and S , school shop ones (nine pounds a pop) !! I am trying to use my limited sewing skills just to get us through to Easter!!

When me & my brother were young, my mum was always threatening to put him in short trousers if he didn't stop getting holes in his trousers. One night we were getting ready for bed when I noticed black spots all over his legs, he burst into tears saying, he had tried to fill in the holes with black felt tip pen, aww bless, luckily mum say the funny side.

Sorry that wasn't any help was it! Only thing I can suggest is not spending too much if you have to keep buying.

I'm 33, and I still get holes in the knees of my trousers!
I care for a 4 year old girl - who seems to have similar issue but with holes in tights.

Read a suggestion on another site, where she sewed Barbie patches over the knees of one pair and hung them in the wardrobe as a warning!

Next ones eem to last IME>

bellavita · 15/03/2008 22:06

My nearly 11 year old DS1 still does it!

frecklyspeckly · 15/03/2008 22:09

Ha ha ha !! I cannot, cannot let him be in shorts at 15!! ironically Tescos are quite good.It is just getting his size in stock. They are 1.50. Not bad I guess for disposable trousers!!!

my poor hubby was bought girls blouses by his mum cos they were cheap. They had huge pointy collars. He is obviously emotionally scarred by this because he has very exacting standards for perfection of sons uniform. The house may be falling down and we cant afford a holiday but - hey!! lets just buy 50 pairs of trousers a month!! just to cure his hurt feelings!!

My ds1 still does it - he's 14 and a half!
tbh half the time he just goes to school with holes at the knees.

GreatAuntieWurly · 17/03/2008 10:56

ds1 is still wearing the same pair of trousers that I bought him in september, I only bought 1 pair as I thought he would put the knees through quite regular but they arent even going thin on the knees. Oh and I got them from BHS

perpetualworrier · 17/03/2008 10:57

I am certain this is reason our Grandmothers made their boys wear shorts all year round - all that stuff about letting the air get to their skin was just a bluff. They knew what they were doing our Grandmothers

VirginiaWoolf · 17/03/2008 10:58

DH had to wear shorts to school for years, including in the winter, because as his parents observed, "Knees mend easier than trousers...."

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 17/03/2008 10:58

Ds has newish school trousers (Sainsbury's) but the bottoms have gone all furry and scuffy at the sides which is annoying and odd

MarsLady · 17/03/2008 11:13

Yes! When they reach senior school, wear and uniform and pull the trousers down aka the latest "those'llfalldownandtripyouup" fashion. Then said uniform trousers split at the butt and the boy has to walk along the wall all day. Daft child! lol

HappyMummyOfOne · 17/03/2008 21:12

I went with Next and no problems whatsoever.

ingles2 · 17/03/2008 21:14

I have my 2 in shorts in long socks all year because of this....
they are the only ones

ingles2 · 17/03/2008 21:18

and you should see their knees!

thelennox · 17/03/2008 21:20

My ds has put his knees through 2 pairs of trousers in the last 5 days. The pair he had on today were only taken out of wrapping on Thursday!!! Think I might turn them into shorts.
Boys.

ScienceTeacher · 17/03/2008 21:27

My DS1 used to be awful. I ended up just leaving the holes as long as possible.

He's 16 now, and not as bad . Instead of getting holes in his knees, he sits in lessons and unpicks the seams - arrgghhh!

Next year, he has to wear business suits, and I really can't picture it.

ScienceTeacher · 17/03/2008 21:29

DS2 voluntarily wore short trousers every day until he got into Year 5. He did it to be different

Knees heal, trousers don't.

I buy ds cords, thick cotton, or denim-y like trousers. Much better than those hideous polyester things
