Hi I was hoping to get some advice.. my daughter is 3.. 4 in may and will be starting reception in September.. she currently goes to a private nursery 2 “school days” a week 8:45-3:15 term time.. there were a couple things I was concerned about with the nursery however nothing major and my daughter seemed happy .. yesterday it has been announced that on the suprise ofsted inspection they had a few weeks ago they have received an inadequate rating and the report is shocking.. she has two weeks off for Christmas however I have decided not to send her back there.. I have been looking for other settings however there doesn’t seem to be places available.. how much of an affect do you think it would have for her to be at home with me untill she starts school in September? I can do stay and play ect I just worry if her being with me will lead her to have a harder time starting school..

any advice would really help xx

I agree with taking your DD out of the inadequate nursery but I'd continue to look for another setting between now and September. Stay and Plays are great but the separation from a parent is an important part of school preparation.
Private school nurseries often have spaces at short notice, they may be a bit more expensive but can still get some early years funding and it would only be for a couple of terms.
Or if you can find another private nursery (day nursery style that runs through August) that would be good because it can cover the summer period right up to school. Just go on the waiting lists and ask around locally for any recommendations.

As a Reception teacher I would say definitely try and get her back into some kind of Nursery, even if it’s 2 mornings a week or something. From my experience children’s transition to school is so much easier for them if they have been in a setting away from their immediate family. Stay and plays etc do not provide the same opportunities to practise separating from you, interacting with their peers without your support, forming relationships with and trusting other adults (teaching staff) Good luck with finding some where you are happy with :)

I took my ds out of nursery the January before he started school, as I could see it had gone downhill. He was fine, and despite being summer-born, was ahead academically when he started school as we’d had so much 1-1 time. My other two dc went straight from nursery to school and there was no difference in how fast they settled.

Head of Pre-Prep here and actually I have a completely different view to some PP.

Children are only little once, some will struggle to separate some won’t and whether they’ve been to Nursery or not the start of “Big School” can never be predicted. I’d say enjoy every minute with your daughter and only put her back into Nursery if YOU want or need to! If she struggles to separate in September then just know it gets better over time and she may have struggled with the change anyway 🤷‍♀️

If I had this chance with my DS(3) I’d take it with both hands; have the best time together and treasure every moment! ❤️

I think better to find another nursery so she has the consistency and is used to being away from you.

I totally disagree with a lot of pp. I think she can get everything she needs with you and stay and play sessions. She is already used to being separated, so she has that confidence.
My son was at home with me for 9 months before starting school due to COVID. The one on one time he got was invaluable and he started school ahead of most of his peers despite being spring born. I made sure we talked about school a lot and mentally prepared for it. He was absolutely fine and those months together when he was old enough to be good company but young enough to still be cute and adorable are some of my fondest memories with him.

Thankyou for all your replies .. it is hard being torn between the two.. I managed to find a nursery which is term time with two sessions 9:15-12:15 or 9:15-2:45 school days which has some availability for pre school so I’m going to look at them in the new year and see if they look better.. I think if she goes 2 days or even 2 mornings she will still have the social aspect away from and I will be able to do things with her the other 3 days. I do worry she would get bored at home with me …
