In-year moving schools - Do you get a report? Previous work?

Hello everyone, Can anyone enlighten me on the process of moving in year, and what happens with school reports and old work?

My daughter left her school near the end of May and we relocated to a different county. It took us awhile to get her into her new school, but she got into a new school just in time to enjoy 3 weeks before the end of term.

Anyway my issue is that her old school hasn't sent us a school report - even though she attended for a very large majority of the year. I spoke to the old school several times asking them to send work/reports across - they were very slow and poor at communicating. I then spoke to her new school and they claim that the only thing the old school has sent across is a piece of paper letting us know her Sats Results (she was in Year 2).

Am I right in expecting her to get a Year 2 report, and her exercise books sent over? Feel disappointed that there's no report whatsoever to record her time in Year 2.

Can't help but feel suspicious that either the old school hasn't sent anything or even done one, or that the new school has lost her report and work.

Can anyone help? There doesn't seem to be any clear answer as to if children get a report sent to parents if they move in year?

Thanks for reading 🙂

We wouldn’t do an end of year report for a child who has left! Also the school I work at doesn’t send home exercise books to anyone.

My understanding is the old school rarely gives any info to their new school. I have no idea why!

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 28/11/2023 10:04

😆 no, not a chance. New school will assess your child in their usual way to see where they're at. Old school forgot about your child the second they left. (Assuming state schools - no idea about private)

Why on earth would they write report for a child who has left? I moved my DC in-year. We were encouraged to download all their previous reports from the portal before we left, if we wanted to keep a copy, as access would be revoked shortly.

Their new school provided a report the end of the term they joined.

Haha I think I have too high of expectations. Her new school gave me her workbooks with only 3 weeks worth of work in!

Seeing as she only left a few weeks before the end of term I thought she might have got something of a record from her teacher of what she's achieved from last Sept to May.

But I guess all this would happen if the schools were funded properly and the poor teachers weren't overworked.

Our primary school sends almost all exercise books at the end of the school year (I think a few are kept for moderation). Seems strange that you weren't allowed to collect them as I'm sure the school put them straight in the bin after she'd left

The school only sent paper reports annually. I only wondered if they would still write a report for her as she only left a couple of weeks before they would have been sent to parents.

They probably have done. I should have clarified what would happen - but moving house is manic. They asked for our new address, and so did her teacher so I imagined that was for them to send us stuff. 🙂

They’re not going to post exercise books 😂

We always ask for new address/new school details but very little is done with it. It’s up to the new school to ask for what they want but normally they would rather do their own assessments etc.

Pennylala · 29/11/2023 07:22

@BlossomValley well yes upon reflection sending exercise books would be silly!

It was just from the conversation that they wanted my address to send my daughters 'stuff' to me that it could be a possibility along with an end of year report seeing as she left very close to them being released.

In my deluded moving house state I forgot to clarify what they meant by that! I think I'm just a sentimental mumma who feels sad that there's no report of my daughters time in Year 2 that I could put in her memory box for her to throw away when she's older. 😂

Yes I understand that, I would probably be the same. But sadly it’s out of sight out of mind and as a teacher I would just be happy I had one less report to write 😂

modgepodge · 29/11/2023 19:24

Yeah not a chance I’d write a report for a kid who had left. I’d be quietly pleased it was one less for me to write!

Schools have no money for TAs or stationery. No way are they going to spend money posting exercise books internationally. Some schools might have given them on the last day or allowed you to drop in after
the end of term to collect them, but many keep them as evidence in case of inspection early in the next academic year, when there won’t be much work in books yet to look at. This may be the case here. If so you may have some luck contacting them now and arranging to collect yourself/post at your expense but probably not as it will take people time to dig out her books from the other 30, parcel them up and take to the post office.
