Year 7 targets meaning

Just had DS’s school report and trying to figure out what his targets mean and what grades they would actually be?

he’s currently on target at a 4a level for most subjects and 4b for a couple.

what do these mean please? What is the target for year 7s? Thanks from a very confused Mum!

Schools all have different systems for reporting and targets, so you're probably best asking the school. Sensible schools send out an explanatory letter alongside the reports.

If they haven’t sent out an explanation of grades, have you checked on the school website? Some schools put an explanation there.

At DDs school that would mean working towards a target of an 8 in GCSEs (one grade per year). So doing very well.

(I find it quite ridiculous extrapolating 11yos results to GCSEs quite bizarre...)

@Bloobloo if there was no info in the report, check the school website.

Check with school as some schools give a target for the year, the one where my boys are gives the GCSE target and how well they are on track to get it in Year 11

That sounds like they are using the old Levels system, which is antiquated now. If it is, I would say that's ok ish for year seven, not great though.

Problem is that when Levels were scrapped everyone just made up their own thing, so no-one on here can tell you what that actually means for your son. You need to contact the school and ask for an explanation of their grading system.

I used to ignore all that crap esp for yr 7 when they're all wildly different having come from different primary schools
