Back from parent's evening - teacher said she's "worried" about dd

DD (7) is in Year 2 and is doing Year 1 spellings and struggling with these. Her reading is fab - at a higher level than average. Its just spelling, teacher says she simply doesn't get "blends" of sounds. Because she doesn't "hear" the blends then she is no good at sounding out a word she doesn't know.
Teacher ased if she had extra learning support last year, which she didn't. I asked if the teacher thought she needed it and she said no as at this age dd should be enjoying learning not having extra stuff pushed on her. Does that sound right? I'd have thought that if she's struggling to this extent she should get extra support. Teacher then told me not to worry (yeah right) and that as long as dd has "got it" by end of the year she'll be fine. I asked what will happen if she hasn't "got it". Teacher said that then we would worry.

Obviously I'm worrying now. Especially 'cos teacher said at first she was worried and then seemed to backtrack and told me not to worry. Teacher also said she dd doesn't concentrate well. So I'm thinking maybe the lack of concentration could be causing it (but she's fine in everything else, numeracy, etc).

Could it be her hearing? - that could explain concentration issue and not been able to "hear" blends.

Any advice, suggestions? TIA.

Get her hearing checked. You may also need to ask for a referral to SALT who will assess her phonic blending and how language 'goes in and out' of her head. I'd do the hearing thing now and request SALT if her progress is not good over the next few weeks.

Yes, she should be enjoying learning, but you also need to be aware of any concerns starting to raise themselves so that you can act on them if they continue to be a problem.

How can you have year spellings?

By all means get her hearing checked, of course. I don't understand why the teacher mentioned it all if she doesn't seem keen to do anything.

She's only 7, I'm sure she'll get there in her own time. As you said her reading is okay which is surely as important.

DD is doing what is classed as Year 1 spellings, so stuff like "next" and "last".

The other Yr 2 kids have words to learn like "whirlwind".

There is a weekly test.

I know from someone who had a 2 year old who wouldn't talk that there is only one SALT person for a huge geographical area. They had to wait months for a referral for something that serious so am not hopeful that I'd get a SALT referral. But I will go and see GP and ask. Should I see GP or HV?

Hi there My dd (7) struggles in Maths and Reading. She is taken from the class (there is a group of them) to play number and word games. It is done in such a way that the rest of the class are actually jealous and think they are missing out on games and my dd doesnt realise that she needs extra help. She has now been moved up a reading group (although is still behind) and her maths has came on great. I would tend to ask the school if they have any extra support that dd can be given. If she feels different from the rest of the class this is when they lose interest and get bored. I feel for you as I has real worry about my dd's issues after the last parents meeting, we have another one tomorrow so will see how we get on. I'm sure your daughter will catch up but try not to worry. I bought my dd spelling and maths books and she doesnt realise she is learning. Sorry have rambled a bit/
