Hi, we’re looking at schools in Charleston in the US for our DD and here’s where we’re at so far:

There’s a lovely single sex school nearby, Ashley Hall, that we know we want to move our daughter to before the middle school years (ages 11-14) so by the 5th grade when their intermediate program starts. However, the school starts in nursery and goes up until age 18.

She’s at a lovely nursery right now where’d we want to keep her until she completes kindergarten and then will start at a new school in the first grade (age 6), which is a fairly common option here.

That means we could either start her at Ashley Hall at age 6 OR at another lovely neighbor school, Charleston Day, that’s coed.

Charleston Day School goes up until 8th grade (age 14) and is slightly closer to where we live, about a 10-15 minute walk versus a 25-30 minute walk to Ashley hall.

We prefer single sex but not sure how much it matters at the primary age. The girls school does seem like it has slightly better academics and more to offer in terms of co-curricular programs.

We are also thinking of boarding once she reaches high school at age 14/15 which could be either single sex or coed. If she doesn’t end up wanting to board though then I’d be slightly concerned that being at one school from age 6-18 years could be a bit stifling, but I know many kids will end up moving to many of the same high schools anyways.

We chose a co-Ed K-12 for both our DC. It’s the best school close to us (we moved close to it, actually) and we wanted co-Ed throughout.

We don’t believe in boarding, especially not as teens. There is a trend around 8th grade for kids to want to apply out, but it doesn’t generally come to much. Changing for high school is normally driven by academics or a poor social environment in the current middle school.

It’s early days for you. Pick one and see if it works for you. There are many great schools in the world, and most would probably be fine for your DD. Only you know which is best suited to her and your family.

Thank you, yes I don’t think we’d move her again for high school, unless it was for boarding, which is so far away right now. Ashley hall offers boarding but it’s a small amount of girls, primarily geared toward international students, and we live so close it wouldn’t make much of a difference anyways.
For a little bit I was leaning closer to Charleston Day since it’s closer but now I’m not sure as Ashley hall seems to have a better enrichment program!
