Leaving teaching job with immediate effect?

Hi all,
Wondered if anyone can help?
Im going to hand my notice in at half term to leave at Christmas, but wondered if anyone knows if I can do this with zero notice before 1st October with immediate effect, as it’s under one month of service?
I have read I can online but cannot see anything about this in my contract.
Does anyone know if this is legal?
It’s a very extreme situation but wouldn’t want to be in breech of contract.

many thanks

If it’s that extreme maybe the employer is in breach.
Also , probably better from your point of view to give your notice now, get your GP sign you off sick, and tell the employer you want an early release from contract. It’s cheaper for them to do that rather than pay you sick leave till Christmas so they will probably agree.

How do you broach an early release?
I’m guessing these conversations have to be in person? I also work part time, doing online tutoring through an outside company on my day off so if I get signed off I wouldn’t be able to tutor!

You would be in breach of contract but it’s unlikely they would do anything about it, you aren’t a slave.

You wouldn’t be signed off. Just tell them ASAP that you want to leave ASAP, and ask them how they would like to proceed. They may well suggest you leave immediately seeing as you’ve only just started, or they may ask you to stay til Oct half term. The sooner you tell them, the sooner you can leave.

Thanks very much for all your advice x

I meant signed off by a GP as this job is making me gravely unwell.

You can be signed off sick with stress from one job while still working another job. The fit note can be job specific if it is that job that is making you mentally unwell

Either talk to the head, or write your resignation as "As per the STPCD, I'm resigning with effect from 31st December. However if I can be replaced sooner, I would be happy to be released from the contract earlier."
If there's a risk you're going to spend a lot of the rest of the term signed off, the head would probably rather replace you properly than have to keep paying both you and a supply teacher. If you can keep going until they've appointed someone, then that makes things easier.

Thank you for this, didn’t realise you could put that in writing.
When I spoke to union, they advised a 1-2-1 meeting with no witnesses present, no minutes taken.

I have never been signed off in my entire career, couldn’t even tell you when I last took a sick day, but this is such a toxic environment where there are no sanctions for behaviour and the kids are running riot!
