I have been teaching primary for 3 years, I am now teaching a mixed year group (1/2). Im waking up miserable, going to work miserable and coming back miserable. Only think that worries me about changing jobs is the holidays. But at this point i would rather work in a less stressful job then to be sad for the rest of my life.

What did you do after leaving teaching?
What could be my options?
I am considering graduate schemes also.

Do it. Life is too short! Have you looked at MOD? I’ve known a few teachers move into the MOD.

A close friend of mine felt just like you OP.

Health comes first, always.

She got a job at the Home Office. Regular hours, four-day week, far less stress and pressure. She said she was so happy to have shorter holidays in exchange for a much happier life.

All the best.

I left teaching after a few years feeling as you do. I got an administration job at a university. It meant a pay cut but I was so so much happier (much better to have less holiday but good work/life balance across the year I found). I am now 9 years on and I now manage the department I joined at ‘entry level’ and finally earn a similar amount as if I had stayed and become a more experienced teacher (about £38,000) so not mega bucks but good! Management is stressful but personally I find it nowhere near as stressful as teaching. There are other ex-teachers in my department and they all feel the same. Good luck!

I now work for the civil service and I’m much happier.

With a teaching qualification, I'd be going to teach abroad in some beautiful country with a better quality of life.

My sister did supply work for a while which she enjoyed more then normal teaching work she moved into an education liason work for local authorities so either working for councils running the school liason at council heritage sites/museums or the same but employed directly by museums. They need people with the appropriate upto date skills in safeguarding and curriculum.

Work based learning, all post 16. Have worked with NEET young people and unemployed groups.
These days I work with apprentices. Much better, happily traded any amount of holiday to not feel on the verge of breakdown all the time. All the holidays were ruined by exhaustion, illness, and the ever present dread anyway.

I also work in higher education. There are loads of former school teachers on campus in all sorts of roles.

The main job site for the sector is jobs.ac.uk

I know that this may not be outside of the educational sphere, but the fact that it is with the Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus may give you something fresh which you might enjoy. It may not be exactly the right fit for your level of experience, but there may be other similar roles there which are.

@Sev124
You don’t state why you’re job is making you miserable.

Sev124 · 25/09/2023 19:30

what do you do?
