I have attached a pic of my DS's homework as I have no clue how to even start to try to help him work it out! Any help very welcome.

Relative risk for York is 0.93/0.75

Jorvik1978 · 16/09/2023 20:50

Absolute risk for Littlehampton is 1- 0.75 = 0.25.

That'll teach me to read the question! The risk given is that the calls take less than 8 mins. The question asks for more than 8 mins.

Jorvik1978 · 16/09/2023 20:52

Sorry, Littlehampton is 0.25 (25%). It's 1 - 0.75.

Playdoughcaterpillar · 16/09/2023 20:53

I think part 2 is 7/25 as it says more than the 8 minutes to respond.

Boomboom22 · 16/09/2023 20:53

Surely not 8 mins so 0.25 or 25%
Then the difference between 93 and 75 so .18 or 18%

Jorvik1978 · 16/09/2023 20:55

Relative risk isn't the difference between the two, it's the size of one compared to the other so you divide the rate experienced by the target.

Boomboom22 · 16/09/2023 20:57

Yes it needs to be less than 7% logically doesn't it for the answer to make sense as they perform far better than target by 18%.

Boomboom22 · 16/09/2023 21:00

7/25 is 28% but that doesn't make sense as they exceed the target. Is it -24%?

SaltedCaramels · 16/09/2023 21:04

The relative risk is 7/25 =0.28

Jorvik1978 · 16/09/2023 21:05

I stil can't read the question! 0.07 / 0.25 = 0.28 or 28%. The interpretation is that calls in York are nearly three times less likely to be over 8 minutes than the national target which intuitively makes sense.

SaltedCaramels · 16/09/2023 21:05

It's less than one, meaning it's less likely to take more than 8 minutes than the target.

Jorvik1978 · 16/09/2023 21:05

I stil can't read the question! 0.07 / 0.25 = 0.28 or 28%. The interpretation is that calls in York are nearly three times less likely to be over 8 minutes than the national target which intuitively makes sense.

So which one are we settling on? :)

Boomboom22 · 16/09/2023 21:21

OK I get it now. 0.28. I now understand relative risk, like probability compared to a control where 1 is null.

Notmyrealmum · 16/09/2023 21:55

Glad we weren't the only ones struggling with it! I'm dreading the rest of the year if this is the first homework. Roll on June
