11+ Exam Timer Failure

Today, my son took his 11+ exams. He shared that due to the large number of students, they were divided into various rooms and halls for the exams.

In the hall where my son was assigned, it was initially communicated that there would be a clock in the room to help students keep track of time. However, when he entered the room, he found that the clock was positioned behind him. Throughout the exams, there were no verbal reminders or visible cues indicating the remaining time, except for a voice on a computerized display board at the end announcing that the time was up.

During his preparation, whether at tuition, at home, or in his previous exam at another grammar school a couple of weeks ago, my son had grown accustomed to receiving timely reminders about the time remaining, such as "15 minutes left" or "5 minutes left." Unfortunately, the absence of these reminders in this format made it challenging for him to adjust, resulting in unfinished questions.

What makes the situation more frustrating is that some of his friends who were also taking the exams today in different rooms and halls received actual verbal reminders about the time remaining. Considering that the exam consisted of multiple-choice questions, timely notices like "5 minutes left" could have made a significant difference. As a result, my son and others in his class feel that they were put at a disadvantage.

Does he not wear a watch?

Not allowed in the exam!

Well the absolutely were at a disadvantage.
He had no chance to put B for all unanswered questions for a start.
I would be writing in to complain / ask for adjustment but I have no idea how they would do that. Was this just for one specific school? If so you may need to write it off.

Are you talking about the Kent Test?

The clock shouldn't have been behind him.

We are given strict instructions that are to be read to the candidates including reminders of how much time is left. The only exceptions are the non-verbal and spatial reasoning sections as these are very short.

We also have a sheet to tick after the various time warnings are given.

I would put in a complaint.

I am an 11+ tutor.

I tell students to wear and analogue watch. They are allowed, it is anything fitbit/digital that isn't.

The clock should have been visible, so this could be something for appeal, but I am not sure how much weight it will carry. It is a real disadvantage as they do need to plan their timings

But it is not normal to be given 15 min, 5 min and 1min warnings.
They usually get one time warning, and not in the very short sections NVR

For GCSEs now, not even analogue watches are allowed, perhaps because some smart watches have analogue faces. But there has to be a clock. Do complain,

We were thinking about bringing an analog watch but ultimately decided, instead of buying a new one from his Fitbit, that my son would check the time as per our pre-discussed plan.

Upon arrival, we noticed that some children were informed that their analog watches were not permitted.

The NVR was 20 question to complete in 10mins
