If so, do you have any thoughts on them failing the ISI report. Children don’t feel safe in the school apparently.

No one from Liverpool then?

My friend's child goes but not sure she is aware of it. What is it?

StressedToDeathhhh · 06/09/2023 19:34

Which one? Boys or girls - secondary?

Merchant Taylors' Boys' School pupils do not feel safe - report www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-66717141

Just googled, looks like it's the boys. My friend's child is at girls school

Anymerchantsmums · 06/09/2023 19:37

It’s the senior boys school.

Oh I don't know anyone in the boys school. Doesnt surprise me though- when I was a teenager the boys from Merchants were absolutely vile

Anymerchantsmums · 06/09/2023 19:49

I don’t disagree @StressedToDeathhhh

I have a friend with three boys there. Put it this way - I'm unsurprised. It's not a school
I would want my children to attend

I saw in the comments section of the Liverpool Echo's article on this story that suggested that a very large number of teaching staff left in the summer. I don't know if that's true but I'd be interested to know if anyone is aware if this is accurate?

We went for the open day recently and I asked the school counsellor and pastoral head directly what was being done about this. They said they have had intensive training since the report and I believe the children involved are no longer merchants children. They cannot afford for this to continue reputation wise so I think it should be much improved.

I have a child at the school and we have reported a vaping issue, 18mths on our child is still vaping in the school toilets (it has been an on off problem for us and there has been spells where they have stopped but started again). The school has been supportive and compared to the last school, they do return our emails and calls. However our child has informed us their bag has never been checked even though we have requested and given permission for the school to do this. The newsagents/corner shop across the road has also sold my child vapes (in school uniform and from the age of 14) and I believe from the school they did go and speak to the shop owner, but by child has still been able to buy from there since. It has been reported to Trading Standards a number of times.
I do believe from what my child has told us a lot of staff left this last summer, and a number classes have supply teachers. This is something I will be speaking to school on this term. If I have any updates I will post back.

Apart from bad publicity last year, in 2019 MTS received a warning letter from the Government in which Management and Leadership was criticised. https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/damning-inspection-could-lead-11k-16586960
One also has to ask why so many excellent teachers have left and why all three schools (Boys, Girls and Stanfield) have had such a high turnover of Headteachers in the past 7 years!

it was once a great school but sadly no longer. Speaks volumes when some ex-staff have family attending Scarisbrick Hall!

The school did not meet certain standards including suitability of staff

uk-england-merseyside-66717141 Experience at this school is that physical and verbal bullying are a constant. Contrary to the quote here "We will not hesitate to exclude pupils whose behaviour falls below the high standards we expect at our school." Pupils whose behaviour falls below standards are not excluded, unless you count physical assault as acceptable. What is extraordinary is the the ISI have now cleared the school as compliant on safeguarding. Nothing has improved safety wise. I would not recommend sending a child to this school, particularly if they have any vulnerability or special need.

@Happydaisydoo, don't believe what the school tells you, it has got worse. The children who make the school unsafe are very much still there in large numbers. The school does not remove children even for violent physical assaults. There is a culture of damage limitation and the school will dispute bullying has taken place, even when there is CCTV footage. Children are fearful of reporting incidents. The school has an unwritten policy of dealing with bullying by victims gradually moving to remote learning for their own safety. Otherwise they are required to go back into a classroom with children who have attacked them even on multiple occasions. This does impact on children's learning and hence the school offers little value if your child is unlucky enough to be singled out for bullying. The school buses are also a source of violent and threatening behaviour and should be avoided.

They are going Co Ed from 2025 so a major major shake up so Maybe they will take these things into account.

Let’s just say MTS has had its day!!! Bullying is not restricted to pupils but staff also!!! MTS received warning notice from Government in 2018 regarding ‘management and leadership’!!! Many excellent, dedicated, loyal members of staff have left, or been forced to leave!!! I predicted 6 years ago it would go co-ed. What’s next …. luxury apartments at MTGS site!!! Watch this space.
