Chesham prep or alternatives for SEN?

DS3 has DiGeorge syndrome but currently very mildly affected. Don’t think he will get an ehcp this time round though he may get worse. Is talking very well but delayed in motor skills somewhat.

looking into private schooling around hemel, herts and bucks at a push. Have heard chesham prep may be a good choice. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I would have thought Egerton Rothesay at Berkhamsted would be a better bet.

I'd call round and email the SENCO's first. Chesham Prep is a fairly big site, you may be better with somewhere a bit smaller like The Gateway School. Thorpe House in Gerrards Cross may be worth a call too.
I'm sorry, I don't know the schools in the other areas.

Why private? Unless it is specialist like Egerton Rothsay private schools are just not set up for SEN and can ask you to leave at anytime. If you are Herts they always turn away for EHCP’s so just appeal and spend your money on professionals for evidence.

It’s mainly the huge class sizes at state schools. Even if we appeal I don’t think dc will be granted an ehcp (we’re using a consultant to help with forms and they agree). Ehcps aren’t for preventative measures which is what dc needs (kids his age tend to slip when older). Surely non top school ‘farms’ exist in the private sector ? Egerton Rothesay is a special school so again I don’t think DC would qualify.

If you appeal with evidence you will get an EHCP. What “consultant” is telling you this? Private schools are bound by the SEN code of conduct but are under no obligation to meet needs and can either ask you to leave or make you pay double the fees for extra support. I know from bitter experience that this happens a lot.

As a word of caution anyone can set themselves up as a consultant for EHCP’s it is entirely unregulated and they can do more harm than good. Why are they taking your money if they claim you won’t get an EHCP? Ipsea or Sos!sen will do this for a donation or you can use an SEN lawyer who will know the law.

You could look at Chenies School or Ley Hill. Or other village schools in Herts that do not necessarily fill up.

The consultant we are using is part of a charity so similar I think. I think it is worth a bash but I don’t think he will get an ehcp even after appeal - as I say he is meeting most milestones currently I’m just concerned about the future. Not sure what people in this situation do, I feel like we will fal through the cracks.

Don’t dismiss Egerton Rothesay. My friend’s child went there for a few years after missing a lot of education due to illness. They did extremely well. Didn’t have or need an EHCP but did need the support of small class sizes and some one on one work.

Chesham Prep is generally supportive of SEN - they don’t tend to admit children who may be disruptive in the classroom, but there’s good support there for hard working children who just need a helping hand.

Egerton Rothesay School is not categorised as a special school. It offers a mainstream curriculum with integrated specialist provision.
