We finish next Friday but Yr6 away next week.

I know they can theoretically come on the last week of term, but do they actually?

Obviously should say OFSTED

Was at an Ofsted meeting a couple of months ago and asked this exact question.
Was told they can, and do, come on the last week. You won't be in the clear until Wednesday lunchtime!

ItsBeenOneWeek · 12/07/2023 19:16

Yes they do

FloweryName · 12/07/2023 19:18

Unfortunately they do. What else are they going to do with themselves that week?

KnottyKnitting · 12/07/2023 19:22

We had one in the last week of term a few years back ( 17th July I think) We had taken down displays and were ordered to put them back up. We were still teaching and following the curriculum but things were naturally winding down.

Year 6 weren't there as out at a theme park for their final fun trip before they left so they weren't seen which was just as well as they were the worst behaved group we had ever had!

Toffeesgirl · 12/07/2023 19:32

Oh dear!! Guess it's continued fingers-crossed time!!

We are in the middle of ours 🙈 I hate them

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 12/07/2023 22:02

They still do it in the last week. Which is just stupid, and frankly spiteful. They know it's winding down time, loads of kids off, lots of kids kicking off, displays need changing, classrooms sorted, there's end of year plays, trips, parties, achievements etc. It just fucking everybody up for the sake of it.

MiddleParking · 12/07/2023 22:09

Not a teacher myself but a headteacher I know got the call yesterday. Brutal!

sendismylife · 18/07/2023 07:24

Sometimes I think that the fact that Ofsted consider that a last week before summer inspection can be reliably compared to one in the middle of the school year proves that they have zero understanding of how children learn and therefore no business inspecting at all.

Just to highlight this we received a 3 last week for B+A.
The reason? We are an ITP and of the 50 learners/employers Ofsted wanted to speak to only half were available due to being on annual leave (cos you know it is summer etc). Ofsted therefore said we didn't have good learner/employer engagement so did set high expectations of learners at the start of their programmes.
We are fucking fuming 😡😡

We were inspected the week before Christmas once. It was hell. Everyone was shattered in that “end of autumn term” way and there were all sorts of other events on that week like carol service and Christmas mass. The kids were off timetable for a whole afternoon making Christmas hampers and to be fair the inspectors were not remotely bothered, but there was a real worry over her her we’d be “marked down” for it.

Toffeesgirl · 18/07/2023 15:26

Well we got the call yesterday and had them here today and again tomorrow. Kids are manic suddenly having to be in full lesson mode having thought it was project-week (still learning but more relaxed and fun))
Year 6 away due back Thurs when it's all over.
So unfair, whatever the outcome is, it won't be a true reflection of the school.

A local high school that my friend teaches in has ofsted today and tomorrow!

SugarPlumpFairy3 · 18/07/2023 15:35

There shouldn't be any change of plan because Ofsted are in, surely. (I know we were once told to go ahead with the sports tournaments taking kids off timetable - although there was the risk that it rained and we ended up with them back on timetable and without their books.) I do know a school that postponed its "dress as a pantomime character" day - I suspect mainly so the head didn't miss out on dressing as a dame.

Toffeesgirl · 20/07/2023 17:35

You're right, there 'shouldn't ' be a change of plan but it's hard to show how we normally teach maths or geography for example,if we don't actually show them how we normally teach those subjects!!

Still, all done now- now just have to do the usual 'get ready for new class work in 1/2 a day 😂

Nearly happy end of term everyone

Ofsted don’t come in with a clip board judging your classroom practice. You should do exactly what’s been planned. Ofsted will look at the curriculum and check what Dc know. They don’t inspect teaching so your slt should not have changed a thing. Ofsted expect a school to work as planned at the end of term.

Toffeesgirl · 21/07/2023 16:36

I'm sorry but of course they judge classroom practice which is why they visit so many classrooms to observe lessons. It's not just to speak to the children as they also do that outside the classroom. In fact, their feedback included a number if comments about the teaching.

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 21/07/2023 17:48

No teachers are grades by Ofsted. No individual lessons are graded by Ofsted. Visiting a classroom is to gather information and evidence. That’s fair enough.
