Maths & English black hole? (Any Adult education specialists?)

If you are y12 or y13 (or y14) you can do Maths & English at college if needed alongside another course.

If you are 19+ you count as adult education and can do Maths & English at college if needed though generally this will be evenings.

If you are 18 and post y13 and not at college it appears you can't do either.
However as soon as you turn 19 you are OK, but face to face courses will have already started.

So the solution seems to be wait for my autumn born to turn 19, then she can enroll in an online course and work through it at her own pace. For the online course, assessment seems to be online too - how does that work with exam concessions and prevention of cheating? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

I'm sure it should be more straightforward than this.

You say the EHCP hasn’t really cost anything so far, but what about the therapy? Are you self funding that? As it should be in F and funded.

TeenDivided · 03/07/2023 20:04

The therapy is coming from the post adoption support fund.

The therapy should still be in the EHCP even if it is funded via the ASF.

Ok, I have a somewhat similar situation with DS2 (17/ y13) bombed out of school during Covid and no GCSEs. He's managing some volunteering relevant to his job aspirations but having done one year FE college he really doesn't want to study for a while. He's being supported by local council careers services who have an SEN team. They've literally just sent us details of distance learning maths and English functional skills which we're trying to enrol with. There are other courses funded for 19+ but this is definitely 16+.

The ehcp is poor, but served its purpose by existing. I had no fight in me at the time, or now really. The ed psych had an agenda and only asked what she wanted to ask. The LA contact never replied to any of my emails. For right or wrong I am just being pragmatic.

Thank you @NotMeNoNo that gives me a different direction to look.

I may also go back to the la virtual schools.

I've got to say the post 16 careers people (Futures in our area) are awesome, they got my other son out of his sixth form dropout black hole and onto a BTEC the following year that he's just finishing. They have all kinds of ideas and schemes and are super patient with anxious clients.

Rummikub · 03/07/2023 21:02

That’s a good idea re post 16 careers service. They should be able to signpost to other provision. Eg in my area there’s examples of supported education which includes small class teaching and life skills.

Well here we are a week before term restarts. Thought the LA had agreed with closest college. Rang them up today, they hadn't realised it was only for English & Maths not another course too.

The LA is on the case, but this is ridiculous.

We don't want her on another Level 1 course just to be 'full time'. She proved last year and the year before she couldn't cope with full time course and English and Maths. Anyway there isn't a suitable course. We have found her work experience in chosen field. She has therapy. We can do 'life skills'. We just want English and Maths, face to face!
