The flaws of schooling

I was an exchange student in Japan but I ended up leaving the program because I was just daunted by the reality of what generation the traditional schooling system is producing there.

I am originally from Eastern Europe and when I returned, I realised it was nothing better here. I didn't realise it before since my mind was so occupied with coursework, and Japan is an extreme case of a flawed schooling system.

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this. As parents, are you happy with the education system in your country? Would you rather send your kids somewhere else if you could?

PS: I'm working on a project to create an alternative to the traditional education system so if you have some spare time, I'd love to hear from you, your feedback would be invaluable to me

What is the education system producing that you don’t agree with?
How is it flawed?
No system is perfect. No system suits every person.
Most if the issues with the uk system could be massively improved with better funding.

A generation of people who are afraid to fail and be themselves, apologies for being vague, you can check this post though but not all of it is true! I don't want to depict Japan as anything but a depressing place or anything but in a way, it kinda is the reality: https://www.quora.com/Is-Japan-a-depressed-nation

And you're right, it's because it's teacher-centred and adheres to the industrial age values, but there are already great systems like this one for example https://soraschools.com

Is Japan a depressed nation?

Answer (1 of 45): Here are a few thoughts off the top of my head based on my 19 years in Tokyo. * Japanese enjoy the melancholy aesthetic of their lives. For the average Japanese mind, there is something beautiful about the injuries of fate. An emerg...

I think it's important to recognise the huge difference between societies which emphasise the individual and those that focus on interdependence and community. Imposing western values on an eastern society would perpetuate colonialism.

The calendar of our education system is broken. We don't need a six week break... but students do require regular holidays. 9-3:15 doesn't work well alongside modern family structures where, by necessity, all adults in a household have to work.

Hello, I do think that there are many flaws in the UK system (I am both a mum and a teacher). People find it really hard to think outside the box and I think it's wonderful you are developing this project.

I went to uni in the US and have nieces and nephews that go to school there and I find the education system much more effective.

I think it has to do with the fact that education there is much more egalitarian. Everyone, no matter where they come from, can gain access to top universities if they have a strength, whether in sports, science, etc.
There is no snobbery about education, which I feel is rampant here. People declare their children "bright" or "non bright" from a young age here. "Bright" can sometimes include children or are heavily tutored.
"Bright" can also be include children who do everything by the book, tick all the right boxes in the system. Creativity is not particularly cherished here and it's also difficult to encourage it in a system where so many children are unhappy/suffering from mental health.
Many surveys have confirmed this. https://www.theweek.co.uk/107937/why-is-britain-home-to-the-unhappiest-teenagers-in-europe

Good luck with your project! Anything that is meant to improve young people's life and therefore the world should be celebrated!
