Private School Teacher's Discount on school fees

There is an old thread on this but years old so starting anew.

My kids are in an independent school and just found out the discount on fees for teachers kids is around 75%.

I am sure there’s mixed feelings on this but I’m sick about it. Why should I be subsiding others when I pay in full just because they work there?

Bursaries are another matter and justified.

I can’t think of another industry or business where the ‘employee discount’ is so substantial.

Anticipate other’s views.

Youre being odd. It attracts and retains better teachers in a time when there is a huge teaching shortage. It’s probably cheaper for the school than paying higher salaries.

They work longer hours in private and so it's a way of making sure staff can stay late & do extra curricular etc.

Do you have an issue with retail staff getting a discount?

There's no way someone on a teacher salary would ever afford private education. So it's a way of attracting decent teachers.

Private schools usually pay less than state and have worse pensions. They have to offer something to entice teachers to work there.

It also locks you in, in a way that a small payrise wouldn't. If you're a good teacher, and rely on thr discount for your kifs to attend the school, this is very useful for the school, as they know you can't leave!

Do they pay tax on this as any other perks such as company cars etc are taxed?

tennissquare · 29/05/2024 14:00

@Grumpymarge , no it's like having a scholarship or bursary, the fees invoice has a reduced amount compared to the published full fees rate.

Military families get 90% off boarding fees. So they pay £5k to annual fees if £45k. Your taxes make up the rest OP.

lol you’d hate DS’ school. A lot of the children at DS’ school are the children of school school teachers. They give 20-30% off for parents to come in and teach around their normal school day.

It's part of their package. It only lasts a few years then their children will have grown up and they will just be getting their normal wage again.
