GCSE English Language or Lit?

Sittingonasale · 16/06/2023 19:12

I need to pass GCSE English (or the equivalency test) to get on my course.
I don't really know how it works now and if the English Lit and Lang are separate or mixed. Do I need to study both to pass the GCSE?
Can anyone explain?

English Language is the one you need. Literature is not necessary :)

MeThinksTime · 16/06/2023 19:14

No you only need one. You can choose either.

Sign up with your local FE college. GCSE English courses are free. They generally start in September, exams in May and June.

I need to do it by September so will probably do the equivalency test. I was wondering really what to revise for. I'd definitely prefer language. I have an English Language A level ( and a degree) but they still want GCSE for TT (RE).

To do GCSE by September is impossible, google functional skills English Level 2.
There are on-line courses.
Good luck

How the heck did you get a English A-Level without the GCSE?

Sittingonasale · 16/06/2023 19:56

My parents moved us to France just before my GCSEs 😡 so I was stuck in a French school for that time not really knowing much French and struggling with a new language. I'm sure I passed English over there but don't have the qualifications now.
I came back to the UK and got into college to do my A levels.

I need to do maths as well.

It is possible to do this equivalency test that they accept as they run tests all year.

Both tests are available via on-line providers. They won't be too difficult, but do do lots of practice papers.

Sittingonasale · 16/06/2023 20:03

Thank you. I am going to have to study very hard!

Functional skills level 2 are usually run by Further Education college or Adult Ed classes but may also be available via distance learning. I'm not sure it would be free for you as you already have Level 3 (A levels) qualifications.

Itisyourturntowashthebath · 16/06/2023 20:08

Via an FE college it will be free, Level 3s and above don't matter, Gove wanted GCSE and A'level is not a substitute. 🤔

On-line tend to charge something. Finding a test centre in the summer holidays will be a bit of a challenge but possible.

MumofSpud · 17/06/2023 18:59

Be careful with doing just the Functional skills - I got caught out with Maths - I did the functional skills as failed GCSE Maths but by the time I started TT it had to be a GCSE!

Students at my daughter's school, if they are advised to take just one English GCSE, then they are told that the Lit is easier!

Sittingonasale · 17/06/2023 21:10

They have given the requirements in my offer and told me which equivalency tests they accept to start in 2023. I am probably going to do AStar equivalency which is going to cost me as it's done online. I can book pretty much any time so I'm going to revise now and see if I feel confident enough before booking at the end of August. Results only take a few days and you can have them within 2 days if you want to.

I did actually apply for funding to do them but because I live in Wales right now I can't get the funding I need for the ones I chose (also online). I'm moving very soon back to England so it's all a bit messy!
