I am looking for a school for my dd. My dd's study was delayed due to health problem and also COVID. I hope she can retake year9 or year10. Any recommendation of independent schools around London or not too far from London? we are fine with boarding school.

Many thanks.

How old is your dd currently and which year would she be in if she was at school? Has she chosen her GCSE's?
What does her current school think of the situation as they would need to write a reference?
Would you consider SW London / Surrey? For example Box Hill school.

she is currently in a state school, in year 10. the school doesn't give opportunity for student to retake. hence we are looking for non-selective independent schools.
Surrey is perfect for us.

Speak to Box Hill, Downsend, Kingswood House and Ewell Castle schools.

Agree with Box Hill. Unlikely any school will agree to retake year 9 if she is already year 10 and presumably she has subject options in mind.

Thank you very much for all replies.
I had a quick look at these school's webpage and seems they all require entry assessment. are they selective? Or the results only be used to gauge the support?

They tend to be less academcally selective.

tennissquare · 31/05/2023 12:41

Yes they will be happy to talk to you. All private schools require an assessment and reference from a previous school before making a decision. The assessment is in the interest of your dc.

Without wanting to be blunt, how non selective does it need to be? Because one thing I’ve learned is that one parent’s non-selective is not another parent’s . So for example, my London friends ( and definitely my HK friends) would consider any U.K. school that isn’t a super selective London day or requires a 130+ ISEB to be non-selective whereas for me, coming from the provinces 🤣 I’d set the bar a fair bit lower.

if she stayed where she is and did her GCSEs next year, what do you think she’d get?

Kings School Rochester

  • Convenient link to London (~30-40min train to central London)
  • beautiful campus and excellent sports facilities
  • coz it is in a grammar area and , close to some famous selective private schools, it has to offer something different to attract students/parents (who do not like/suit the academic-focused atmosphere)
skyblueblue · 07/06/2023 16:17

Academically wise, I think Kings rochester is fairly easy to get into (because lots of grammar nearby). The students there seem to be very confident and "posh" (maybe because their uniform is smart lol). Good academic results (considering it is non-selective)

Full/Part Boarding options

Rochester Independent -
small classes
non uniform
great pastoral care
great exam results
My went there and loved it

Lampzade · 07/06/2023 16:22

Nephew went there

skyblueblue · 07/06/2023 20:09

I forgot that Rochester Independent has boarding too. I have a friend working there. The campus is small but cozy & down earth. Great pastoral care and excellent results.

ConstantlyCooking · 07/06/2023 20:29

Try looking at international schools in London as they tend to be less selective and used to children arriving at non-standard points. Please pm me for recommendations.

Thank you very much for all replies. I have contacted these schools and waiting for reply. It is tricky as close to the end of the academic year.

thanks.

ideally, no exam.
But if there is exam, I hope they only use the results to gauge level and support.

Sutton Valence and Bethany School. Both in Kent with good facilities and non selective.
