Private schools in south-west London

Hi all, I need to enrol my little girl in primary school for the 2025 year. We are Aussies living in London and have stayed much longer than expected because my husband is doing well at work. We have no knowledge on the schooling system here and would appreciate any help we can get.

We would like to enrol our daughter in a good private school. We love the idea of Putney Girls as we live locally. We are not particularly wealthy, we just have slightly above average paying jobs and have prioritised our daughter having a private school education over having a large family, as a private education is something we didn’t have. That being said, we are hoping to not send her somewhere overly pretentious.

If anyone could help that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry I realised I didn’t actually post my question. If anyone could recommend schools that are considered “good” that would be great, similar to Putney Girls, as we may not get in and I understand having a list is a safe route. Please also advise any schools to avoid.

In Putney there as also Prospect House, Hurlingham, Falcons Girls.
The state primaries are also very good on the whole and lots of people choose to send their children to these even when they can comfortably afford Private Schools. I would seriously consider the state schools as well and save your money for Secondary School.
The schools I mentioned above are non selective. There is also Wimbledon High which I will be entry by ballot from next year. Lots of private schools in Fulham as well eg Fulham Prep.

@STG001, you have lots of time, you need to:

  • Subscribe to the good schools guide
  • Visit as many open days as you can fit in this autumn and start registering for schools. Wimbledon high is moving to a ballot process and it's open for over another year for you.
  • speak to the nursery where your dd attends and ask where she sits in her cohort , ie what type of learning environment would suit her.
  • speak to your friends and neighbours and find out where they send their dc
  • find out more about the local state primary schools as they are very good in SW London and many parents wait until their dc is a bit older for the private system.

Thank you for the advice. I have heard that it is difficult to get your child into private school later on as the main intake is at 4 years, and your chances of getting in later are slimmer. Please let me know your thoughts or experience with this.

Not at all, lots of schools only start at age 11. It's very common in SW London for pupils to move from state primary to private secondary at 11+.

Hi - Mel Ingle is a local schools consultant who can tell you everything you need to know about both state and independent in your area. Well worth paying for an hour of her advice.

Selective schools at 4 are a bit random. Lots of girls with birthdays in the first half of the year! By 11 it's much clearer what their strengths, interests are etc. My DD went to a state primary. Well over half her class went to Private Secondary schools.
