Are there any London Exam centers that still offer late registration for A Level exams?

Hello! I had an issue with registering for my A Level Maths exam (commencing 6th June) and I've been informed i've not been entered. I shall ask my school if it's possible to sit it with them but I'm trying to find exam centers that still offer students to sit with them as an alternative. Could anyone point me towards some possible venues?

Thank you

It's possible for them to make a late entry.

Have they said why you haven't been entered?

Actually, I'm tagging @Moredarkchocolateplease in as an Exams Officer. Maybe you could advise? DP gets fed of me asking so many questions about exams when he never needs to ask me questions about admissions, suspensions, data, funding and governance!

I spoke to my previous head of year about it and he said he'd handle it and I didn't ask much more. I suppose this is on me, I just assumed he'd enter me alongside my other a level classes at school. When I got my timetable and didn't see maths, I went to ask the new head of year why that was and he said I hadn't been entered because I hadn't paid? It had never mentioned that i'd have to pay for it.

So, it should still be possible for my school to enter me right? The edexcel website only says there must be enough time for papers to be delivered but surely a week is enough for that right? I do hope so at least

Are you at college and doing a levels
it is possible (we entered someone today) but why would you pay if it a class of yours

Dulaka · 26/05/2023 17:50

Ah, that's relieving to hear. I'll go make sure they do it properly this time. AS long as the possibility exists then I think this will work out!

Yes, i'm in year 13 right now. I did my GCSES in 2021 and I got a grade 6 despite working at 7-9 throughout year 10-11. I had to appeal but they wouldn't let me switch into maths afterwards. I really enjoyed maths and wanted to do something related to the subject so I decided to self teach alongside my other A Levels.

When I spoke to my previous head of year, i was told I wouldn't have to pay despite taking the A Level as a private candidate. However, the new head of year insists that despite being a current student I should have paid the fee (which I wasn't aware of).

Hi! Thank you for this alternative. I'd prefer to sit it at school but i'm glad to have an extra option just in case. I've given a brief look at the website and I can't seem to see a deadline. Would you happen to know if they have one?

Candidates can be entered for an exam right up until the day of the first paper. But it is very very expensive (very late fees which vary from exam board to exam board). We sometimes have to do it if an entry has been missed. Papers can be downloaded from the board on the day of the exam - but normally they send us enough that we have spare. At my college we would expect a student to pay for an exam if it wasn't part of their programme of study (for example we have some students sitting Portuguese which we don't offer which they have paid for) as they won't be funded for it.

So in theory you can certainly still be entered. But as regards paying for it - it sounds like there has been a change of policy at your centre which you aren't aware of. You need to speak to the Exams Officer urgently to resolve this.

Cost isn't an issue. As much as it sucks, I did work last summer. I'd hoped to use the money on a summer trip or perhaps as a little spending money at the start of uni next year but I suppose this is far more important.

I did talk to them but I was initially told by my head of year at the start of the year that because I was a current student, I wouldn't have to pay. I'd asked multiple times and received the same answer. I even spoke to other members of staff and was told the same thing. Most kids here who sit extra gcses and a levels (though usually in a language) aren't expected to pay for it. This is why this sudden change in policy from my last confirmation in march was rather shocking to me.

I'm glad that with maths it's simply a paper and not any other components that i need to worry about. I will be sure to speak to someone and sort this out as soon as possible. Thank you

Yes I agree with PP you can still be entered until the day before and possibly even closer to the exam.

I work in a private school so we charge candidates and it is v expensive.

Off the top of my head it is the normal fee plus double the fee for late entry penalty.

I have to say, I am so so impressed at you OP for your resilience and perseverance. If only you could somehow include battles such as these on your ucas statement!

Dulaka · 27/05/2023 12:26

Thank you! I'll manage it. I appreciate the advice. I myself attend state school so my other A Levels are paid for at least which is always nice.

haha. Thank you for your kind words. Maybe I'll put it on a job application next year! Imperial's rooms for students look awfully expensive lol
