  1. tell you what sounds each letter in the alphabet makes (eg A=ah)

  2. tell you what letters a word begins with. Eg if you said 'what letter does garden begin with' and they say 'guh... G"

  3. be able to tell you words beginning with a letter eg if you said 'tell me a word beginning with h' and they say 'hat'

Thank you!

My eldest probably all around 4, maybe the sounds at 3. The skills came in the order you’ve written.

My middle is nearly 5 and has fairly recently got all her sounds and can tell you the sound a word starts with. But I don’t think she could necessarily do letter - eg wouldn’t know that chair begins with C as well as ch.
She hasn’t fully got number 3 yet.

  1. Nursery because they taught phonics sounds as opposed to the letters
  2. Reception
  3. Reception

My four year old can probably do it when he's in the right mood. Having said that I'm not sure if he'd manage more unusual letters like X. In the wrong mood he doesn't even know what letter his name begins with.

LindorDoubleChoc · 22/05/2023 19:24

Don't remember. Are you obsessing OP or do you have a reason to be worried? If so speak to school.

marshmallowsforbreakfast · 22/05/2023 19:24

3/4

Mischance · 22/05/2023 19:26

God help us, does it matter!? Revel in the imagination and curiosity of children; put the books away; and just let them be children - they only get one crack at it!

Neurodiversitydoctor · 22/05/2023 19:27

I think probrably 3, possibly just before. All those a is for apple books are for around that age I think. He also went to montessori nursery.

modgepodge · 22/05/2023 19:30

Age 3. These are skills taught in reception so I’d imagine for most children it will be about age 4.

SummerHouse · 22/05/2023 19:32

This didn't really come up in conversation with mine. 😂

I honestly don't know. But DS was very slow to get reading in reception. He would repeatedly respond with dog to us desperately spelling out c-a-t. He has got a good sense of humour though.

He went on to be exceeding in reading. He read every night and would happily tackle any book you gave him. Sadly he seemed to quit reading for pleasure at 12. I think you can just try to enjoy taking the horse to water and don't invest too much emotion into the drinking part.

MintJulia · 22/05/2023 19:34

ds 4,4,4

This is a child who was walking at 7 months but didn't say a single word until 2 years and 5 months.

They all develop at different rates. I'm convinced mine does it to wind me up. 🤗

Lemonademoney · 22/05/2023 19:35

around 4?

I wouldn’t stress about it though. None of my dc ‘shone’ in EYFS but by KS2 tend to be doing pretty well. Let them enjoy being little, this learning thing is a marathon not a race x

Questionsforyou · 22/05/2023 19:37

LBFseBrom · 22/05/2023 19:40

3/4

dottyrobin · 22/05/2023 19:40

My dd was 3 in Jan and can do all of those things. We play a lot of "I spy..."

lljkk · 22/05/2023 19:48

Half way thru reception?
They're mostly adults now so I can tell you for certain how they turned out...
Spoiler: high achievers.

Mutabiliss · 22/05/2023 19:54

Mine's 4 and a bit and can do all of those things (obvs for simple words, not tricky ones). So I'd say at various points during 3? They started doing phonics in pre-school so he learnt the sounds but he knew the letters already.

I doubt it matters though, they all learn at different rates and mine is emotionally very young still.

Heckythump1 · 22/05/2023 19:57

3/4, she's an October birthday though, so older in the year.

Spendonsend · 22/05/2023 19:57

Boy 1 - year 6. Phonics was a nightmare for him. He is predicted a 7 in English GCSE which he is currently sitting.

Boy 2 - nursery (aged 3/4). He has autism and has lots of difficulties. He goes to a special school and will not be capable of GCSEs.

Hopeandaprayer · 22/05/2023 20:00

my DD started nursery at 2 and knew all of her phonics, the rest by 3. She’s due to start reception in September and reading ORT level 3 books and can do a fair amount of multiplication.

my DS is 2.5 and has just figured out his own name when called 🤷🏽‍♀️

They’re all different, it doesn’t matter really.

Alloveragain3 · 22/05/2023 20:01

3.5
They teach him at montessori and we do some games at home e.g. foam letters in the bath

YoucancallmeKAREN · 22/05/2023 20:12

All of my children could do these by3/4 and knew all primary and secondary colours and at least 8 shapes by 3. By 4 could write their name, could count to 20 and recite their address, most children could back in the 80s/90s

CoodleMoodle · 22/05/2023 20:17

DD could do those by 2.5 if not slightly before. She'd taught herself to read in her head by 3.5! She's 9 now and still very advanced with her reading/English.

DS is nearly 5 now and I'd say he could do the first one by 3, the second by 4 and the third after at few weeks of school. He went to preschool from 2.5-4yrs, started school at 4y2m.

ThePersistenceOfMammories · 22/05/2023 20:20

age 18 months. DD autistic and hyperlexic and could read before she could walk

MightyEagle · 22/05/2023 20:22

My cleverest kid, about 18 months. My least academically inclined kid, more like end of nursery ie 3yo.
