So, not so poorly they can not sit the exam. But, they are coughing, spluttering, snooking up, bunged up, feel lousy as you generally do with a cold.

Been using the nasalspray to try and form a barrier against the lurgy in the back of their throat, lemsips, hot baths, in bed, chamomile tea...

What is good to do here? They are well enough to sit the exam, it's just a cold, but it's making them feel lousy so they won't be firing on all cylinders.

It's an exam first thing in the morning.... Is it just a case as treat as I would on a normal school day and send in with lemsips and cough sweets??

Arrghhhhh I'm so annoyed!!

Use a sinus rinse like Neil med, and sudofed that contains pseudoephidrine that dries it all uk. Then olbas oil on pillows and the olbas bath stuff in the bath :)

Lemsip cold and flu tablets, the ones with the decongestant and caffine in them. They make you feel better than you do without a cold.

LadyHag · 22/05/2023 10:42

I might try them 😂

Could it be hayfever? Might be worth trying antihistamines.

They should also make sure that they talk to the exams officer - give the exams officer a call if they've already gone in, and then hopefully the exams officer can find them at the end of the exam. There is a small percentage uplift on the marks that can be applied if they're unwell or suffering from hayfever.

Unfortunately hayfever isn't included in the conditions that special consideration can be applied for (very unfairly in my view)

Ninth document down on https://www.jcq.org.uk/exams-office/access-arrangements-and-special-consideration/regulations-and-guidance/
says that severe hayfever on the day can count for 1% (less than other illness, but not nothing).
I think the centre has to be satisfied that it is severe enough to impact on performance - so it's only going to apply on that odd day when someone is in such a bad way that it's obvious to the exams officer.
