I have an introduction booked with a tutor soon for my 9yr old. Has anyone tried this method? Did it help? Thanks

Qualified dyslexia teacher here. I have never heard of the Davis method. A quick Google search prices are in dollars so this suggests it is not a British programme. Good dyslexia intervention should be very specific to your child. It’s a cliche, but it’s true: if you have met one person with dyslexia, then you have met only one person with dyslexia.

Thanks for your reply. When you say you’re a qualified dyslexia teacher, what are your qualifications? I’m interested to know what to look for in the UK (I’m in England). I live in a fairly rural county and it’s hard to find anyone locally.

I came across the Davis method online at https://www.dyslexia.com/davis-difference/davis-programs/davis-reading-program-for-young-learners/ and there seems to be tutors all over the world and happens to be one in my county. She usually starts by doing an assessment but as he’s already had one with an educational psychologist at school so she said she doesn’t need to do that again.

She wants to meet my son for an hour or two first to see if they can work together and if they’re a good fit she’ll go through the programme with him. She said she usually does 9am-1pm for 7-10 days, it’s an intensive programme that will help him understand how his mind works. She says it’s not a magic fix but will hopefully help him navigate reading better once he understands his mind better. Then she does a follow up session or two a few weeks later to check he’s getting on okay.

It’s £40/hour and might mean him taking time out of school depending on the tutor’s availability, so I want to be sure it’s going to be useful for him.

How old is your DS?

@gardendream
To be a qualified specialist Dyslexia teacher/tutor, as a minimum you need to have the OCR Level 5 Certificate in Soecific Learning Difficulties. Most people who take this route are already qualified teachers, although a few are teaching assistants.

I have looked at the link you posted. I am extremely sceptical of its claim that children who enrol “are highly unlikely to develop a learning difficulty”. You have stated that the school’s EP has already assessed your child and the title of your thread suggests that you believe your child already has a learning difficulty which you believe to be dyslexia. There is no cure, or way of avoiding it by using this programme . I had a look at the link to the ‘kit’ that they send parents. The ‘hands on’ multisensory materials which you would expect a dyslexia tutor to provide look to be very minimal.

Dyslexia is a disability which is covered by the Equality Act 2010. It is a lifelong condition and intervention with a young learner is normally long-term and will consist of a weekly one-hour session. It is definitely not like filling a hole in the road which can be sorted out in a couple of intensive weeks of training.

Have you checked the Patoss Tutor Index to see if there is a tutor local to you?

The British Dyslexia Association also have a list of approved tutors, although I think there are more with Patoss.

There are also dyslexia tutors who can deliver online tuition, although IMHO face to face is always best.

Patoss Tutor Index

The tutor index is a list of Patoss members willing to have their names given to other professionals or parents seeking tutors, assessment or advice.
