Homework AFTER KS2 SATs

After a week doing the hardest SATs tests yet, my (Year 6) son was set homework today for this weekend which stated ‘anyone scoring 7 or less will have to retest on Wednesday.’ Unbelievable pressure for 11 year olds. This isn’t ok.

Ignore it - homework in primary is optional. Notify the school that your DS will not be completing any homework or retests and the school should be completing the curriculum and you would like evidence of the lesson plans. Copy to the Head and Governors (am a former Governor).

Check ur child won’t miss playtime to do homework though.

Legomum78 · 12/05/2023 20:15

I spoke to the head. Told her that it was entirely unnecessary to set homework after SATs week, that my som won't be doing it and that if he is sanctioned I will make a formal complaint. Unbelievable.

Crikey! No homework for my year 6s this weekend!

BendingSpoons · 12/05/2023 20:22

That's really mean! They definitely should have had this weekend off!

Parker231 · 12/05/2023 20:25

Primary do not need to do any homework - there are sufficient hours in the school day to cover the curriculum. Ignore any homework. Let your DC’s play, do after school activities, watch TV.

I told mine that their homework was to relax, play games, stroke their pets and snooze on the sofa. They’d worked hard!

I’m looking forward to getting back to normal next week.

It's not about covering the curriculum. It's about your child getting the best out of a subject. Plus secondary school for year 6s going up is a bit of a shock!

My year 2 dd loves her homework. Plus I love doing it with her. It's not an either or surely? My year 6 will come down and ask if he's confused about something. I never understand why parents dislike a bit of learning at home!

As an aside. Sats weeks is definitely unfair for homework!

@Sometimeswinning - my DT’s didn’t do any homework in primary - none was given. They were encouraged to do sports, music and other interests.

ArseMenagerie · 12/05/2023 20:39

Wow! I’d have said the same as you and actually I might consider making a formal complaint anyway - to the head and governors.

it’s not OK

MissRainbowBrite · 12/05/2023 20:40

My daughter is in Y6 and they've had no homework set, just been told to go home and enjoy their weekend. Exactly as it should be.

My children all have other interests. Football, swimming, (short stint at music!) Still don't feel that negates the positives of homework. But I totally understand its not enjoyable for everyone. Please don't assume because I encourage homework my weekends are not spent on sidelines or cafes for swimming.

That's awful and would be a "no" from me.

How come they were the "hardest SATs tests yet?"

Why on earth would you jump from being expected to complete homework to demanding evidence of lesson plans (which you should be told no to, as there is no requirement for teachers to produce written lesson plans).

I do agree that setting homework this weekend is too much.

Why would op want to see lesson plans? Confused

While setting homework this weekend is ridiculous, writing to the head and governors is an ott and disproportionate response. As a former governor, you should be aware that homework isn't used for curriculum coverage. Additionally no teacher on earth writes lesson plans for homework. You should also be aware that there is no requirement to produce written plans.
