Striking staff

AIBU to consider it wrong to read posts on Facebook about striking teachers having fun days out when on strike? Isn’t the honourable thing to be out on a picket line or at a protest meeting?

They’re not being paid. They can do whatever they like.

Honourable? I’m not convinced it is striking workers that are dishonourable tbh

ramonaquimby · 05/05/2023 22:55

Have you been equally concerned about how striking junior doctors, nurses, university lecturers, airport workers etc have been spending their strike days? Gawd. I’m so fed up of these threads

MrsHerculePoirot · 05/05/2023 23:00

Isn’t the ‘honourable’ thing to do to stand up for schools, education and pupils up and down this country? What have you done to address this massive failing in funding for schools?

WeedKnife · 05/05/2023 23:05

The honourable thing is to go without pay for a job you love and know is important for the greater good tbh. They should do whatever else they like.

I feel the same about any striking staff whether it be teachers or nurses or whatever. I just don’t think it’s good idea splashing your days out all over Facebook 😞 I know they don’t get paid for it but if you believe in your cause you should be prepared to get out on the picket lines to garner support and sympathy.
After working in education for many years I am sympathetic that funding is dire but funds are often channelled in the wrong direction, eg top heavy management etc. I’m sure it’s the same in hospitals 😩

Why should I try and garner support and sympathy? If I strike I am withdrawing my labour to protest to my employer. I can whatever I like on the day I am not paid.

FrippEnos · 06/05/2023 15:25

The government put in laws about how many people there could be on a picket line.

Maybe you should take this up with them.

Mynameisntrelevant1 · 06/05/2023 15:32

So picket lines at schools only work at 8:30am..... otherwise no one there to see you! Then you have whole unpaid day to as you please- most of my school wrote reports!

Karwomannghia · 06/05/2023 15:34

Losing a day’s pay for a day where I actually caught up on a bit of work as I wasn’t teaching/sorting out problems in school and then spending time with my family seems enough of a commitment as far as I’m concerned.
Also you don’t have to be a teacher to protest so you could lead by example.

You clearly don't understand what the strikes are about. School budgets have been decimated for nearly ten years because the government has not matched the resources given to schools with inflation rates.

Teachers' salaries come from the school budget. Inflation has sky rocketed and the result is that schools have less and less money to spend on the children, school resources, whilst teacher salaries are also decimated.

The government is basically ruining the British education system by providing less money to schools. Teachers are frustrated because they see the impact this has ultimately on the children and the schools' ability to function. Teachers are leaving the profession "en masse."

When a teacher strikes, they do not get paid for the day not worked. Striking (whether on the picket line or not) is a cry for help, it is the ultimate resource. Nobody wants this.

What I find heartbreaking and outrageous at the same time is members of society that completely disregard the seriousness of the state of our education system today, when this will ultimately have a disastrous impact on our economy and social wellbeing.

I totally believe in my cause and am willing to lose a whole day’s pay for it. It’s totally up to me what I choose to do with my unpaid day, thank you.
