Hi
I would like my daughter to go to st Michael's in future however its 1 hour 17 minutes on public transport. I gave friends who drive to finchley and say its approx 45 minutes. I know there are coaches that take children from round here to chelmsford and colchester grammar and I've heard theres a coach that goes to a Jewish school in finchley. Anyone know of any coaches go to st Michael's in finchley? Or does no one go from redbridge? My other state options are woodford county trinity or davenant if anyone has any insight into those schools. thank you!

I know both areas, and I have a friend who does a similar drive to a school in Barnet

it's fine by car in the sense she accepts her life is built around it, her DD has health issues but is fine in the car for 45 mins or so. The morning journey is better than the evening one.

by coach - how are drop offs organised?

by Tube - you need to add on at least 15 mins to what tfl say. Going from door to door, if you are very close to the station, I think it would be lucky to do it in
1 hr 30. It's a soul destroying waste of time as an adult IMHO. I once had to do Finchley to South Ken for a job with a 20 min walk at the South Ken end. It was more like 2 hours, it was awful, and I had turned down another job offer in Moorgate...grrr.

end of rant. So, as long as Tube not involved, maybe okay, but is the school that good? I used to have a neighbour who taught there, randomly.

If you don't know the school well, then why do you want your dd go there?

That would be a long, tiring commute on public transport for an adult, let alone a child.

B. Have you called the school to ask if there's a coach from your area?

3 hours a day in London traffic doing the school run is not a good use of anyone’s time, unavoidable special circumstances excepted. Think of the extra-curricula activities and tutoring that could be provided with that time and petrol costs.

Educational success is built on many things. Being exhausted from the journey, and living miles from friends making socialising difficult don’t add much, IMO.

Why do you want that school in particular?

I don’t have personal experience but I thought Woodford County, Trinity and Davenant all have a good reputation.

As an employee, he was fine there. He was a very laid back friendly bloke.

I don't have children but when I was looking at flats in Buckhurst Hill last year, estate agents made a point of saying there were three good schools in the area, you've named two of them and I forget the other.

I posted on a thread the other day about my experiences with my goddaughter who was so often worn out - a school would have to be astonishingly good for it to be worth a child suffering that commute IMHO. But if you're driving her, it's different.

The other would be Bancroft's up on the High Road.

No idea about the one in Finchley but WHS had a very good reputation when I lived there and I'd be surprised if it doesn't still.

St Michaels is pretty hard to get into. You have to sit an entrance exam and is very over subscribed. Very good school though . But a long way for a 11 year old to travel every day esp in the winter

Decorhate · 22/04/2023 20:17

It’s not just the daily commute you need to take into account. What if your dc wants to do an after school club - is the journey still doable later in the day? Are you prepared to go that far yourself for parents evenings and school events?

Will tour dc be able to bake deep friendships if they live too far away from classmates to see them outside school?

Decorhate · 22/04/2023 20:18

Sorry for the typos. I would say move closer if you really want that school or choose one closer to home.

hastalavista · 22/04/2023 20:30

Ok thank you all.
