Calling all Year 6 teacher....

Hi, hope you can help. I used to teach year 6 and have been asked by a friend for help with her daughter who is approaching SAT's.

I've printed out last year's papers just to give us a guideline but I can't find the banding to give you a level - i.e. what score is needed to get a level 3/4 etc.

I know it varies from year to year but can anyone give me a rough guideline? Also is it the same in all three subjects?

Thanks very much

Y6 papers are sent off to be marked so would a Y6 teacher have that info? Why don't you get some practise papers?

We used to have them in my school. Will get some practice papers - just wanted to use the one's I printed off.

It does vary from year to year- the banding on last years papers was slightly different as they were a bit harder
But a rough guide would be:
For science each paper (A and B) needs to be about 21 or so for a level 4 and 32 for a level 5. (42 overall for a level 4 and 64 for a 5)

For the maths both papers (again A and B)need to be about 20 ish for a level 4 plus 12 out of 20 for the mental test. Level 5 is about 17 out of 20 for mental maths and 32 for each paper.(Total 54 ish for a level 4 and 80 ish for a level 5.)

Reading is about 21 ish for level 4 and 32 for level 5. Writing not so sure about as that is marked in a different way each year.

Obviously these scores for level 4/ 5 would only be in the lowest band (4c or 5c) for that level and 4b is average for year 6.

It is important to realise that the value added aspect to these tests is more important to consider when thinking about a child's progress.

If a child leaves KS 1 on 3a and only gets 4c in year 6 then that's not expected progress. On average children should make 2 whole levels within KS 2. e.g. 2b to 4b r 2c to 4c

Having said all this I think these tests are a real pile of and often do not show skills and talents that many children have.

You're probably sorted now, but google along the lines of qca SAT level thresholds and follow your nose.
