back door ID scheme. Clearly. This government has an insatiable appetite for prying. Every time someone wakes up and takes notice, they just dream up a new scheme. makes you wonder what the real agenda is.

So if there are overseas applicants for jobs how are their qualifications/'learning' records going to be checked?

I hate this idea of databases.

Miggsie · 13/02/2008 21:42

I would refuse to participate unless govt could prove the database complies with data protection acts plus the child protection act and they can be audited to show total compliance.
Which I bet they can't...
Total waste of time. Who would clean the data? Who would use it? How would it be used? Are they really going to enter this number each time you turn up at an academic establishment?
Probably useless, potentialy dangerous I'd say...

"Pupils in English schools already have a learner number but it is currently destroyed when they leave school."

Not according to the tutor on the SIMS course(the School Information Management System, run by Capita, which is used by probably the majority of state schools) I was on the other week - she said your SIMS record stays with you for life, including all exclusions.

What about private schools and Home educated children?

Madsometimes · 15/02/2008 11:01

About 20 years ago I listened to this

teacher: You've blotted your copybook. You have been truanting from school and I am going to have to put this on your permanent record and you will having a 2.5 hour detention.

What a scary thought that your permanent record actually stays permanent. Surely teens are mean't to rebel a bit and then you grow up. I find this very sinister.
