Schools at Hemel Hempstead

Hello mums,
We are planning to move to Hemel Hempstead with a new born and wondering how the schools are and what are the relevant catchment areas? Also any feedback about living in Hemel Hempstead / Apsley / Berkhamsted is more than welcome. Thank you!

Hey - these are three quite different areas. Hemel is quite a functional town - quite a lot of stuff happening …ice rink, cinema, ski slope etc but not very pretty or particularly desirable. Only the old town has any character. Boxmoor is nice but I wouldn’t call that Hemel. Apsley is on fringes of Hemel - it’s ok quite nice a little industrial near canal some nice new housing close to station. I believe there is half decent primary. Some
nureesies on main road. Traffic is busy though and again no real vibe. Berkhamsted is much much nicer than these but v expensive and very middle class. You wouldn’t get anything less than 0.5mil and anything decent 1 mil. All primaries there are good - 4 or 5 like greenway or at Thomas but oversubscribed so you have to live close. Hope this helps.

Have a look at Tring, a lovely place to live. 15 mins from Hemel.

Also be aware that Bucks uses the 11 plus system for secondary, Herts doesn't.

Hemel and Berko are 2 entirely different towns by demographics, with Apsley more in the Hemel demo. Berko is insanely expensive for housing. You’d get more for your money in Tring or Kings Langley. We moved a while ago, so I can’t really comment on schools.
