Hi,

DS17 likely applying for uni next year so I realise that I am thinking well ahead 😀

School have asked him to think about post 18 but he says he has no clue. I am trying to assist with a bit of research to see where he might be happy and do well.

He enjoys sports and science.
He has had some MH difficulties in the past and lacks a bit of self confidence
Academically looking at B/C grade A level results so not Russel Group

We live in a small town in the North and North of England and I think he would benefit from somewhere a bit more exciting but not too large a city
Train station preferable

Any experiences ?

@rainbowstardrops Yes, the grades are really high but interesting to know they took your DS with ABB. I’m going through this process myself with DS2.

purplewolfie · 05/03/2023 10:12

Edge Hill is a good call. They offer a sports psychology degree that might interest him?

keepcalm11 · 05/03/2023 10:40

Just had a look at Loughborough, uni and courses look fab but the entry requirements are too high for DS.

Edge Hill interesting, I hadn't even heard of it.

A bit of a trek, but maybe somewhere like UEA in Norwich or Anglia Ruskin in Cambridge?

millymae · 05/03/2023 10:49

Have a look at Chester - the main university campus is right in the Centre of town

You don't say where you are in the North and this might be too close to home, but York St John offers Sports Science.

Great city for students, lovely campus near the city centre, and good rail links for travelling elsewhere.

@keepcalm11 i think Liverpool John Moores is also very highly rated for sports related courses too.

keepcalm11 · 05/03/2023 12:31

I'm going to run these ideas past DS see if I can kick start him into action 😀

The course is the most important thing and content varies. I would also suggest that it isn't essential to go straight from school to university so don't push if he's not sure, working in retail or hospitality for a few months before going allows them to save crucial money.

This summer is when the open days are, I recommend taking him to 2 or 3. One place I would suggest looking at is Leicester

keepcalm11 · 05/03/2023 16:44

Leicester another possibility thank you. Does anyone have experience of Lincoln ?

Physiotherapy is grade A / A* material. I’ve got a few physiotherapists in the family, and that’s what they got. It’s very competitive.

If a foundation year is taken, then physiotherapy can be accessible with somewhat lower grades. A young person I know whose studies suffered in the pandemic got a clearing place at Leicester for physio with a foundation year on something like BBB grades, and is doing really well.

houselikeashed · 06/03/2023 10:47

We're looking at Liverpool Hope for DD. She is expected similar grades. She liked it because it seemed small and supportive (SEND).

ZaZathecat · 06/03/2023 10:53

Keele is a small and friendly uni, which might be good for his confidence. Don't know if the location is convenient or not.

user1465390476 · 06/03/2023 16:16

Keele is a great shout.

May09Bump · 06/03/2023 19:54

I was going to say Keele - had a nice feel to it when we visited, but from what I remember a bit rural. University of Surrey also has a nice vibe, we use their sports facilities a lot and the students seem happy / relaxed. Like others have said the course is the first item to narrow down then the Uni.

keepcalm11 · 06/03/2023 20:08

Keel sounds like the vibe I want for DS . But I take on board that course comes first. And at the end of the day I can't choose for him he needs to want this and do it for himself. This thread has been really helpful thanks everyone

My ds is at Edge Hill. He has ASD and the support is outstanding there. It’s a full campus university so like a village with all accommodation within the grounds and the facilities are brilliant. He pays £133 for his room in halls which is the most expensive one and he has an en suite shower room and a gorgeous room in a flat of 8.
Edge Hill has won loads of awards and we liked it because it’s small but has easy access into Liverpool as he works 2 nights a week there.
we’re pretty local and we can be with him in 20 minutes so he’s got the best of both worlds.

it’s definitely worth doing the open day and they cater very well to neurodiverse students if anyone has that to worry about.

keepcalm11 · 06/03/2023 21:24

No sooner said than done . DS has just booked open day for Edge Hill. Hopefully he will want to see some more as well and he will open up to the possibilities.

DS has a friend doing physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam & enjoying it.

DY10DY11 · 07/03/2023 21:15

University of Worcester. Does pyschology courses. Very sporty with loads of options like rowing, basketball etc. Smallish but pretty city.

You need ABB for that, though. One of my relatives went there to do physiotherapy and he had As and A*s.

EwwSprouts · 07/03/2023 21:24

@daisypond The OPs DS is in yr12. Lots of DC improve at that age and there should be an aspirational choice.
