World War One museums for Y5

Mammyofonlyone · 02/03/2023 13:44

I'm just looking ahead at the curriculum for my daughters (Y5) school next term. In history they are studying World War One.

If possible I usually aim to do something at home that falls in line with what they are studying (obv not always possible but I try).

Does anyone know of any particularly good museums/exhibitions/etc in the UK that I could plan a visit to one weekend? I live in the north but am happy to travel.

I did wonder about the Imperial War Museum about which I have heard good things, but I wondered how much of it focusses on WW1 specifically.

For context she is Y5 but does q. well at school so could handle something focused on older children.

TIA

It's WW2, but Eden Camp is up north.
Beamish has some stuff focused around 1900, but not war, and a 1940s war farm.

Whereabouts are you? The Army Flying Museum has a good history of flying including the WW1 era

Great ideas, thank you, I'll take a look

I went to the IWMN last year and there's definitely WW1 stuff there, plus the poppies alone are worth seeing.
The Maritime Museum in Liverpool has some stuff on the sinking of The Lusitania but I literally had ten minutes left as I spent all my time at the slavery exhibits on the top floor.
Both are free and I loved both cities, but I'm a single adult so of no help with anything else for a Y5 child.

Western approaches - Liverpool War Museum is good, very interactive. They have a FB page www.facebook.com/westernapproachesHQ

Sorry just realised you wanted WW1 not 2

We went to the imperial War museum in London and there is a whole floor for ww1. You also have the HMS Belfast in London but I'm not sure how much of a part that played in ww1. Both are really interesting and well worth a visit. We've also been to the Churchill war rooms which I highly recommend once she's learning about ww2.

There's also Portsmouth dockyard which is amazing, we've been several times. But I'm not sure whether there's any ships that were used in ww1 specifically. There's so much there to see and do.

My DD is doing WW2 atm & we went to the Imperial War Museum at half term. We went round both the WW1 & 2 floors & the WW1 floor was much more interesting & interactive than the WW2 one.

Imperial War Museum is great , you also have the Army Museum in Chelsea and the RAF museum at Hendon which both would be worth an hour of two if you were down for a weekend … all well worth a look as I think WW2 turns up on the curriculum relatively soon !

Waitingforchid · 02/03/2023 14:25

HMS Belfast is interesting too though you do need to be relatively agile to climb up and down the ladders between decks

HippyChickMama · 02/03/2023 14:27

It's only a small museum but the Staffordshire Regiment Museum in Whittington (near Lichfield) has a recreated WW1 trench. You could combine it with a trip to the war memorial arboretum at Alrewas

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone, I really appreciate them. Looks like we're off to the big smoke to visit the IWM!
Just got to find a spare weekend now!
Thank you

Eden Camp is amazing!! I am not into war museums, but I was super impressed.

You know there's one in Manchester too? If that is closer for you, you might not need to free up a weekend. I haven't been, but one of the previous posters mentioned it (IWMN = Imperial War Museum of the North).

PatriciaHolm · 02/03/2023 23:31

HMS Belfast was only built in 1936!

IWM is great though.

pizzaHeart · 02/03/2023 23:44

We visited some time ago the amazing exhibition at York Castle Museum. It’s about WW1: very interactive and covering lots of aspects. Not sure if it’s still on.

If you are coming to London to see the IWM then it would be worth also going to Greenwich and going to the National Maritime Museum as they have stuff on the Battle of Jutland. Its also quite a fun museum as it covers a huge range of topics from Tudor barges to the slave trade etc all from a maritime perspective. Greenwich is really lovely too with good street food in the covered market.
