Hi all
Does anyone know how easy it is for your child to start a new school in Y5 - looking particularly in Bedford area. Any info greatly appreciated - thank you.

Do you mean in terms of application or to settle?

Soproudoflionesses · 14/02/2023 15:11

Depends if there are spaces in new school?
If there are, you have ten days for child to start after accepting the place - in my area anyway

Depends how oversubscribed schools are ie luck

Well, if you move into the area, the local authority has an obligation to find you a place.

It may not be in a school of your choice, or very near though. In year 5, if the school is more than 3 miles away, your child will be eligible for free transport (this could be a bus pass)

Hi thanks for responding all - I’ve just moved into a village - there is a local primary school. She’s in private at the moment but that was due to move - now looking for local state school to start next September y5.

It too early to apply if you don’t want to place until next September. I think you have to take up the place within 2 weeks of being offered it. It will be luck of draw if the schools near by have any empty places.

Is the school full in year 5? Is there a waiting list if so? You may well have to forfeit a term's fees in lieu of notice. If you make an In Year application or are offered when on waiting list you have limited time to take a place up.

Ahh ok - so I need to talk to them and ask for the likelihood of a placement in 2023-24 - if it’s close I need to apply asap and take a place immediately. Just didn’t want her to start mid year. Thanks for your help :)

IIRC Bedfordshire has the middle school system, though maybe not everywhere
