Poised with a finger above my Amazon shopping basket - can anyone recommend any PC software to help my Year 3 dd with times tables and spelling?

She likes playing on the PC and has really enjoyed the Dorling Kindersley Year 3 Cluefinders game but we would love something more specific to help her with times tables and spelling. I seem to remember someone talking about something where you could type in the week's spelling list...

We do do them 'the old-fashioned way' as well but sometimes a little electronic help would be very welcome...!

I recommend the Jolly Phonics DVD -and there's a CD of games due out sometime soon.
My grandson, aged 3, adores watching the DVD and I suspect (hope!) that there's lots of subliminal learning going on

www.kented.org.uk/ngfl/games/ Several 'phoneme' games to download here, including 'Sound Buttons': select the vowel phoneme pattern then select other phonemes to create a word. Finally press the sound buttons to listen and blend.

A friend who's a KS1 teacher uses Learning Ladder CD roms and recommends them. They're by Dorling Kindersley I believe and come in all different stages.

are there any good games on the CBBC Bitesize KS2 site?

For tables I would recommend this one.

I have to say that whilst the site has been popular, the sure fire way that has worked for ds1 is to use flash cards. Can't remember where I bought them but probably Amazon.

KathG · 09/02/2008 20:22

Lidl's flashcards! They only do 2,3,4,5,10 but they are in the form of a hunt, you do one get the answer, turn over next question -and if you get them all right a tick on the last one. We have cracked x3 in 2 evenings use of this! (I will make the other tables once we need them).

Pokes theMMJ to read the thread - that's year 3 not 3 years old.

Although I have to admit that I have a 3 yr old and only clicked on the thread to see whether it's normal for 3 yr olds to be learning times tables.

thanks for these links

Brightminds also do a couple spelling cd games that I'm considering for ds2 - because althought he ambleside school one is great I have to enter the spelling each time he does it.

The maths training for the nintendo ds may also help with tables I think - have just got it and hope I can encourage my boys to memorise their tables better.

mrsruffallo · 17/02/2008 17:21

I agree that Learning Ladder are rather good

mummyoffrankie · 20/02/2008 13:14

have you tried educationcity.com? you have to subscribe but some education authorities get it free and you can use their school password from home. great for maths and spellings and my dd loves it..

Saturn74 · 20/02/2008 13:17

The Timez Attack free trial is quite good.
