Will my child be able to attend prom?

My child (15) is in ASD testing process and has extreme anxiety, due to this she is unable to go to school and we are attempting to arrange online schooling. If she only goes in for her GCSES will she be able to attend her prom as well? I would love to see her go to prom as I think she handled 4 years of education so well. We are getting her help for her Anxiety but the school she’s currently in aren’t the most supportive.

If going to school is too overwhelming maybe prom might be also? If she wants to go then great and support her, but don’t make it a thing she feels she’s failed at doing and you wanted her to do.

It will depend entirely on the school and what they decide their policy is. There is no set approach to this.

I do agree though, is prom something she wants to do?

It will depend on the school.

Are you deregistering her from the school? Because if you are then I wouldn't expect them to take her for prom.

If she's still registered with the school, but agreed to be "educated off site" then go and discuss it with them. However they may well be doubtful that if she has extreme anxiety around school whether it would be the best thing for her to come back into a large group who knew her but may well have moved on friendship wise. Does she have good friends she's managing to keep up with?

Does she want to go to prom?

lbnblbnb · 06/01/2023 20:30

It will depend on whether you are doing online schooling as a home school student, in which case she would no longer be a student at the school so no she couldn't. Schools don't allow anyone apart from the registered students from the year to attend prom for various reasons.
If she is doing online schooling for health reasons but is still registered at the school, it would depend on the school but I think they might legitimately question why she can attend prom but not school.

Does she want to go to a prom at a school she's too anxious to attend? I'd find the prom far more difficult than a normal day at school. You say you'd love her to go but would she?

I know some schools make school attendance about x% a requirement, it will depend on how the school are running things

Pieceofpurplesky · 06/01/2023 20:41

If she has an EHCP in place that states she cannot attend school then the school should allow her to attend the prom as she medically cannot attend school.

My DD missed all y11, and was completely out of education due to anxiety & depression. She recovered enough to sit some assessments (2021 cohort) and wanted to go to prom. Realistically she would have coped with the mingling outside at the start but not the indoors bit. However it didn't run due to covid restrictions so we never had to broach it with school.

I can see how someone could cope with prom but not day to day school, depending on the issues. I would try to chat with head of year 11 / senco to agree targets to be met for prom if she wants to attend.

What on earth is the point in asking here? Only the school will be able to answer your question. I hope things improve for your daughter.

who organises prom - at my daughters school it is all organised by the parents - the school have no input or control at all.
