University with better grades at A level

My DD has just finished her first term of 6th form. Her report is outstanding and her teachers think she could achieve 4A* at level next year ( it is early yet of course).

She is achieving the top marks in her college in 3 of her 4 subjects and is not far behind in her 4th.
She is working incredibly hard and loves the college. Her previous school (private boarding) was a misery and we regret sending her but felt trapped until the GCSES were over.

Her results were far from her potential and I am aware this will affect her university choices but she is on top of the world and is now talking about applying to top universities in the UK and USA..

Her self esteem is very high at the moment and she is very proud of her achievements this term. We have our happy girl back .Can anyone with experience or insight offer advice? Her subjects are Maths / further maths /economics and English literature.

It’s still risky to advise that. Are you saying these students repeat y1? So in effect do 4 year degrees? Obviously apprentices will have their degrees paid for.

Complete detail but @RunLolaRun102 where do you advertise your data analyst posts? Are they London based? Ds currently doing a Physics MSc and thinking about that sort of area once he graduates.

I recruit data analysts in finance for a big 4 (not pwc, our programme isn’t as big as theirs). There is such a shortage we’re targetting STEM A Level students & offering to pay for their degrees. And yes swapping universities is risky but can be done depending on the course / uni / experience of the student. A couple of my interns moved from Coventry / Nottingham to Oxbridge with a strong portfolio of work experience. Several have moved from DMU / Leicester to LSE too.

Exactly this. The city is desperate for workers. Maths and Further maths is the key here, and she is female on top, there is an extreme diversity drive at the big 4 atm. A year out with work experience will be an amazing bust for her CV. And I think PwC, KPMG etc now recruit blind - you just sit a test, they don't look at grades/gender etc. So if your dd is good at standardised tests, the world is her oyster. It's really 2 groups of people in life: people who ace standardised assessment tests and those who don't. School grades don't matter in comparison.

Well, grades sometimes matter at getting to interview stage, but pp said that many pupils now have As at A levels, so if your dd has As at A level and is good at standardised tests, she'll belong to a very, very elite group of people that is very high in demand and should not have to worry about a less than stellar GCSE.

For the programmes -usually directly at schools, through our website etc. But we hire talented 18 yo’s with STEM A Level /BTECH backgrounds year round as contractors / temps and advertise via Indeed, Reed, LinkedIn, Adzuna. These are only temp jobs on paper - a STEM A Level student like OP’s dd is gold dust.

Some do, some don’t. This is why you need to pick your courses carefully. Generally though STEM subjects that have a significant maths component are easily transferrable particularly when those students can evidence their professional work experience in coding / supporting the implementation of machine learning algorithms.
