Anybody a student midwife? Should I train as a mature student?

Hi all, so I’m 45 and at a bit of a crossroads in my life, the children are both at secondary school now and I feel as though they don’t need me so much now, I gave up work when they were younger to devote my time to them. I have always been super interested in midwifery and anything to do with pregnancy and birth and I love finding out information on the subject of birth. I would love to go back to university and train to be a midwife but I don’t know if this would be possible as a mature student - has anyone got any experience of this? The only 2 aspects that would worry me would be going into theatre to assist and having to give stitches - would you have to do these aspects as a student? Basically any information about what being a student midwife entails would be super helpful - tia xx

You should find some varied experiences on the Mature Study and Retraining board here:

A friend retrained as a midwife in her 30s, her children were still in primary school. She practiced for about 10yrs but recently became a lecturer in midwifery.

I'm mid-40s and currently doing an undergrad degree and absolutely love it (not midwifery tho)

I am not a midwife but am in education as an adult, 3rd year of degree. DO IT! what have you got to lose! Go for it
