Older kids are beating up younger ones and using their mobiles to record this. They are then putting the footage on to websites.

What would you do if you were prime minister eh GDG?

zephyrcat · 30/11/2004 19:52

when i left school 10 years ago the teachers were scared of the kids - i can only imagine that its even worse now.

Gobbledigook · 30/11/2004 19:55

I'd make everyone wear glitter!

Apart from that, dunno! I don't claim to have the answers!

Except something that vaguely resembles punishment for wrong doers.

spacemonkey · 30/11/2004 19:56

Such as?

zephyrcat · 30/11/2004 19:57

is that such as for why i think its worse now sm?

spacemonkey · 30/11/2004 19:58

No ZC, I was asking GDG what sort of punishments she would deem appropriate

JoolsToo · 30/11/2004 20:00

well for one - I'd make thieves pay back what they'd stolen.

I'd make muggers of old ladies go and decorate their houses from top to bottom and do their shopping for a year.

I'd make violent people do dirty jobs that no-one else wants.

Paedophiles and rapists would have to be locked up for life I'm araid - there's no changing their pyschye (sp!)

agy · 30/11/2004 20:03

The government should do what they said they would do - put loads of money into education. I'm sure a child that has been educated up to their maximum potential is going to be better balanced all round. The schools are doing their best, but they need more money. And I think parents of disruptive pupils should have to sit in on lessons to keep their little s**ts in order.

jampot · 30/11/2004 20:03

Jools for PM !

zephyrcat · 30/11/2004 20:05

ahh ok sm

JoolsToo · 30/11/2004 20:07

thanks jampot - thought everyone would jump on me for being heartless!

jampot · 30/11/2004 20:08

I dont know what hte answer is but i think whatever is being done now to combat bullying aint working properly. Do we blame the children, their parents, society, the school, the government? I sadly think that a lot of people turn a blind eye to bullying because they dont want to get involved. I heard a very sad story in the last couple of weeks involving 2 children and a couple of people (including a good friend of mine) said they dont want to speak to the Police because they dont want to get involved!!!

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2004 20:29

To change the subject back to the original one for a moment - this sounds a bit like one of those stories thathas been exaggerated out of all proportion to me. Most bullies aren't imaginative enough for this - I would guess that the story came from one incident (or possibly one gang), probably in the US. Maybe I'll be proven wrong.

Kids have always bullied other kids, it's just that at the moment there's a bit of a vogue for stories in the press. School is no more dangerous now than it ever was: according to one study, it has decreased in English schools since the early 1990s (search in google for "Smith & Shu, 2000" ). Since (in my opinion) it's much more acceptable now to admit to being a victim of bullying, I suggest that bullying is less common in schools now than it ever was.

And yes, bullies are usually very damaged children for whom harsh punishments will just exacerbate the problem rather than solve it. Just because I believe that doesn't stop me from sympathising with the victims or condemning the behaviour though (you see: I condemn the behavoiur, not the individual. Been reading all the parenting books, me).

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2004 20:30

Jools - your punishments aren't heartless, they're constructive. Much better than prison.

hercules · 30/11/2004 20:30

Err no. It's a problem in my school.

[NB typed too fast - 2nd para - "it" means bullying]

Branster · 30/11/2004 20:32

Is teh world getting worse or does the media pick up on more gruesome stories that it used to? Or all this new technology gives horrible characters more ingenuity??? Un bloody believeable that people can come up with such ideas to, in fact, torture other human beings.
yes, the law, or the way it is applied is useless and there seems to be a younger and younger segment of the population who is in a way encouraged to do bad things because they know for a fact they'll get away with anything. Argggggg...

We get one of those free local newspapers here and a few weeks ago there was a letter in the 'Agony aunt' section from what appeared to be a young girl stating that a well known group of boys is regularly enticing girls into their group, getting them drunk and having sex with them. The writer then proceeded to say that everyone knows what they are up to and she herself stays well clear of these boys but her 'mate' (exact word) got involved with them and ended up having sex and now she is all worried poor little thing because what if she is pregnant and she also feels shame at everyone ever finding out what happened. WTF??!! Could such stories be real? On one hand what an idiot of a girl knowing what she was getting herself into. On the other hand, more importantly, are we talking about a group of youths gang raping on a regualr basis with everyone knowing about it and they just populate our streets freely? Or is it all just a bit of fun taken out of context and blown out of proportion? Whereas I'm perfectly aware is very likely to be an untrue story, what if it is true? What if this sort of things happen everywhere?

zephyrcat · 30/11/2004 20:33

Have to disagree sp - my sister is 13 years younger than me and is just about to turn 14. The things that are going on in her school now are an awful lot worse than what was happening in mine 10 years ago. In the last couple of weeks they have had to introduce secutiy at the school - and her school is the supposed 'nice/good' school of the area.
Things are getting much worse I'm afraid

vict17 · 30/11/2004 20:34

I agree SP. It just seems to be topical at the moment. Bullying has always been a problem but education is very much at the forefront of todays politics and media so it seems worse than it is. Still much more likely to die in a road accident but there's no campaign atm about that (but there will be with xmas coming and drunk driving hitting the headlines again)

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2004 20:34

I did say maybe I'll be proven wrong, Hercules!

You should contact whoever is hosting the website.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2004 20:37

Branster - it could be true. But 20 years ago, it wouldn't have been called "rape"

Branster · 30/11/2004 20:40

well, I see it as rape if the story is as described. what amazes me : teh fact that people who know of wrongdoings do not report them to the police. that's the least they can do.

SenoraPostrophe · 30/11/2004 20:42

But do you see what I mean though? I recall similar incidents from my youth (not me, and not more than 2 or 3 boys) but in the past this sort of incident was regarded as just one of those things that happens and one of the reasons young women should not get drunk.

I don't think that the incidence of it is increasing, but condemnation of it is (rightly so).
