Halloween costumes for school

puddingandsun · 22/09/2022 10:45

Just trying to choose a Halloween costume for my five year old.

I personally don't like the gory/ scary looking ones and not too keen on skeletons, pumpkins or vampires. There's lots of those in the shops though.

Would be interesting to hear what is your child/ren going to dress up as?

My DDs school had Halloween fancy dress last year as they couldn't have the Halloween disco. I believe they will be doing the Halloween disco this year so won't dress up for school.

SpinningFloppa · 22/09/2022 10:55

Our school doesn’t celebrate Halloween? Didn’t know any did 🤔

SpinningFloppa · 22/09/2022 10:56

Never heard of a Halloween discos either our school does nothing at all for it, maybe a black cat or a ghost? Witch?

We are in the UK and both my children's school let them dress up for Halloween. They even do Halloween activities.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/09/2022 10:57

What about a black cat?

Some ears, a tail, and eye pencil for nose and whiskers (and flicks for cats eyes if s/he'll sit still enough!)

JenniferBarkley · 22/09/2022 10:57

What do they like? Witch is easy and not scary for girls. There's also superheroes, fire fighter, doctor - anything at all. Do your DC never play dress up?

Dinoboymama · 22/09/2022 10:59

My 11 year old is going as a ninja my 7 year old is going to be an adventurer, think like dora the explorer.
My child in nursery wants to go as blippi.

Our local primary have started doing this in the last couple of years - possibly because Covid stopped them doing a Halloween disco which was v popular.
Easy costume if you don't want anything scary - Pugsly or Wednesday Addams. Pugsly - stripy top and black shorts, Wednesday - black/navy/dark colour dress and plaits.

Yes - U.K. Not sure if it's a fairly new thing but he dressed up at nursery school too. Went as a firefighter.

He has an astronaut costume he likes but not sure it's going to be ok for that.

Astronaut will be absolutely fine OP.

We had a multipurpose dinosaur costume that came out for Halloween and book day.

BigglyBee · 22/09/2022 11:29

I made two costumes (identical except different sizes), which lasted all through primary school. There was a long, black tunic with a matching cloak. This could be added to or adapted for a wizard, grim reaper or vampire (and other things which I can't now remember, but I remember doing a lot of adding to and taking away of things!).
We also had a surprise "Dress up as something Scottish" day, with 2 days notice, so I put him in an old dinosaur costume and said it was the Loch Ness Monster.

Hi.. my daughter is 4 year old and started her reception year in September. They have Music week dress up day. For Reception year the theme is Rock n roll outfit/ Elvis outfit. Can someone please suggest how can I dress her up in a rock n roll outfit? I am absolutely clueless. Kindly help 😊

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/10/2022 13:44

Are you clueless on idea or execution? Grin

I'd do a plain coloured t-shirt and cardi, and a circle skirt, with white ankle socks and plimsolls (if she has them for PE). Hair in a high ponytail.

I could whip up a circle skirt on a sewing machine very quickly, but I know not everybody could.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 04/10/2022 13:47

DD chooses her own costume, last year vampire which was easy as just bought a cheap costume from Asda, this year she wants to be a zombie robot so we're making a cardboard robot costume then 'distressing' it with frayed wires, rust and whatever else we can think of that might make it look zombied.

Cheerybigbottom · 04/10/2022 13:48

At that age my son was either a wizard/black cat. As he got older (and school did a dress up day every Halloween) he climbed up to "sorcerer!" Or "did my own face paint and cut up good clothes to be a zombie" 😁

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 04/10/2022 13:49

Or, black t-shirt and leggings, and buy sone black felt. Cut out "Pink Ladies" and tack it onto the back of a pink cardi or jacket for a Grease-inspired outfit.

Yes I should this is the first time I tried posting on Mumsnet and unfortunately ended up posting in an existing thread. Then didn’t understand how to delete it. Hopefully with time I will get better 😊
