Why is so much of our children' s schooling firmly rooted in the past?

There are so many positives about education and I'm supportive of the school and teachers however some practices just make me🙄🤦.
My son has gone on a school trip today and on the way to school he told me that the kids had to pick teams in which to work. The kids that weren't chosen were allocated into teams by the teacher. My son tells me that it is always the same kids that get picked.
Why is this still going on in schools? it's always a popularity contest it was when I was in school in the 70s/80s and surprise surprise it still is.
My sons teacher qualified 2 years ago and I was hopeful she would bring some new practices into the mix.

I don't think DD ever had that. suggest you have a quiet word with your school.

This is really bad practice. I think it's worth chatting to the teacher, explaining how this affects your child and seeing whether she's willing to stop doing this or do it less.

It’s not normal these days at all, and was never acceptable.

I’m not the moaning type, but I’d definitely talk to school about this.

Dreadful practice and teachers should know that

That happens in your son's school.
Doesn't happen in ours, for precisely the reasons given.

What exactly do you mean here, @Runningwithoutstopping ?

When I was at school, for sports, the teacher sometimes chose two captains who took it in turns to chose their -mates- teams until nobody was left. That wasn’t a nice feeling to be left till last, but there was never anyone not picked though so the teacher never had to do anything.

Or did the teacher say, ‘get into groups of 2/4/6’ and most people did, but the teacher had to sort out those who didn’t get themselves into a group? I much preferred choosing which group of 2/4 to go in rather than being randomly put into groups with people I didn’t know/like.
