How confident are you of getting your first choice in March?

Goes out to those who have applied for a school place of course!

very. I asked the school, they said it was highly unlikely there would be a problem.

I guess we're lucky though, had the choice of several village schools that were all very likely to have a place.

pooodle · 19/01/2008 21:25

Wow, lucky you! I am so stressed already and have 6 weeks to wait yet How about those of you that have applied to oversubscribed? Mine is 3:2 over, so only 2/3rds chance of getting place. Urgh

We have applied to a school out of catchment, but it doesn't usually fill.

Just have to wait and see.

Don't want him to go tho, so not at all excited or anxious.

pooodle · 20/01/2008 08:32

TheodoresMummy, why don't you want him to go? If you don't mind me asking?

I'm hoping as her sister is there already that we're OK but you can never be totally confident as the loaltown is growing like topsy & locla kids (quite rightly ) get priority as it is their catchment school.

That said our local alternative has improved greatly over the last few years so I wouldn't be too if that was the only alternative. Just trying to keep life simple by having them both on same site really!!

bossybritches · 20/01/2008 08:36

loal = LOCAL

cleaninglady · 20/01/2008 09:18

Ive only put one choice so ds must get in its a small village school though and my DD is already there so shouldnt be an issue - fingers crossed! DS is only 4 on August 26th so am worrying already

exbatt · 20/01/2008 13:49

100% confident here. This is for secondary school and every child in the town is in the catchment area for both of the main secondary schools. There has NEVER been a case as far as anyone remembers where a child who lives in the town and puts a school down in first place hasn't got that choice. The only parents who might be anxious are those applying from other towns.

I didn't even bother putting more than one choice down.

Unfitmother · 20/01/2008 13:52

Pretty confident, only put one choice down so we'd better

Lazylou · 20/01/2008 13:53

Hmm, wish I could be as confident as some of you! The first 2 choices were pretty good but the third (the school nearest us) isn't all that, so I'm worried that we'll be offered a place there.

onesock · 20/01/2008 13:59

bossybritches, AFAIK, the latest criteria states that siblings come above catchment so you should be fine. I think it goes,
1)Special needs/requirements (inc those children in care)
2)Siblings
3)Catchment by distance
4)Outside catchment by distance.

3andnomore · 20/01/2008 14:00

100% positive...

roisin · 20/01/2008 14:09

I reckon we've got about 5% chance of getting in
8 local secondaries, 4 are in special measures, 2 just managed 'satisfactory'. Results are pretty dire.
Of the two remaining 1 is RC and the other gets good results and has just had a fantastic Ofsted. So every non-RC child in the area (including ds1) has applied to go there!

Our back-up is an independent school, and if he doesn't get in to the state school I don't think we will appeal: he'll just go straight to inde.

onesock · 20/01/2008 14:21

I'm sure the RC school will just assume you're RC with a name like Roisin, though!

Oblomov · 20/01/2008 14:21

I am quite confident. Catholic school, was agreed by priest. Maybe I should be more worried.

Oblomov · 20/01/2008 14:23

Unfit, I wanted to put only 1, but in Surrey, you have to put three, or it will not be processed. It didn't say that anywhere on the form, but all Headmasters/Mistresses, told us it was essential.
I don't want our 2nd or 3 rd choice - they are vile.

laura032004 · 20/01/2008 14:32

Not sure really. We're on the boundaries of the catchment area (do catchment areas exist for primary schools now?). The head said we were likely to get in, as people from our location 'usually' do. We haven't got siblings there yet, but I'm hoping we get in as there are 2 other children from our street also applying there, and it would be good to keep them all together. That said, our second choice is great too, and the third is also fine, just a bit big for my liking.

My only worry is that if we don't get the 1st, would we get the 3rd choice, as people who put our 2nd choice as their 1st choice would get their choice first??? [very confused by it all emoticon ]

CarGirl · 20/01/2008 14:35

o% chance of first chance and no longer 100% of second choice as I've just found out they're oversubscribed by 100 applicants - normally they are massively undersubscribed and get the rejects!!!!!!!!

bossybritches · 20/01/2008 14:38

Thanks onesock!

IdrisTheDragon · 20/01/2008 15:02

We got our notification of DS's place in December (but our LEA does seem to do the whole application process early - we had to apply by the end of September.

I feel quite lucky to know it is all sorted .

laura032004 · 20/01/2008 15:50

That's strange Idris - whereabouts are you?

cece · 20/01/2008 15:54

Not very sure at all.

Cargirl, you live me don't you? I am rather alarmed to read that there are 100 extra applicants. Which school is that not OP is it????

janeite · 20/01/2008 15:54

We are reasonably confident that dd2 will get into our chosen secondary school, as we moved house two years ago to get dd1 a place there. We live less than 5 minutes walk away now, so the catchment shouldn't be a problem, I hope! This time two years ago I was so stressed, so being all chilled about it is a novel experience for me now.

GrapefruitMoon · 20/01/2008 15:58

Our primary allocations came out last week - luckily have 2 dcs already at the school so wasn't too worried!

Secondary for dd will be allocated in March - in theory she should have no problems getting her first choice, based on the entrance criteria, but until we get confirmation I'm not counting my chickens!

needmorecoffee · 20/01/2008 16:12

dd gets a SN place in our local primary for when she starts reception in september. But then we live 200 yards from it so she'd probably have got in anyhow. I did try and apply normally but they found out she has a statement and is in a wheelchair and insisted on the SN route.
She starts in their nursery class tomorrow. Don't know who's more nervous! Me letting my lil babe go away or them, having to handle a severely disabled child
