Split teachers

Hi all

My son has today found out his teachers for year 6. This is a first for us, but he is having two teachers share the post. One doing two days and one doing three.

It's a bit of a worry as I am not sure how having two teachers will effect his learning, as both will surely teach in different ways.

Any teachers or parents who have had this happen to their children, can you let me know any positive or negatives from this?

Thank you

Should be fine. They normally have many more than two teachers in Year 7

Positives: if you don't get on with one you have the other, new energy, different teaching styles

I'm a teacher from a split week and a parent. Your child will get above and beyond.

I’m a teacher 3 days and the other teacher 2 days - it’s great for the children as we have different interests so can focus on the different subjects. You’ve no need to worry

Positive - not likely to be sick at the same time, might have different strenghs so if they plan carefully you get lots of strenghth.
Cons - telling one teacher something does not mean the other teacher will find out about it.

Thanks all, feeling better already :) They have yet to employ the two days a week teacher though

Had this a few times. Mine both liked it as it was variety.

Plus good practice for secondary when they have new teacher for every subject

I've had split teachers for my DC a few times and never had any issues.

It'll be good preparation for secondary school next year when there are different teachers for each subject.

In year 7 it’s not unusual to have 14 teachers, so getting used to 2 in year 6 is probably not a bad thing. When they researched the recruitment and retention issues in teaching they found allowing part time working would have the best impact on retaining teachers, the reality is some split classes or potentially classes without a teacher.

It’s fine. My dc all had this in primary and it was never an issue.

One advantage is that the teachers will have different areas of specialism (such as PE or maths); another is that if your child is less keen on one teacher, they have the other one for half the week .

On a side note, it is a really great way for schools to hold on to the skills and experience of teachers (often parents) who want to work part time, so offering that opportunity is something to be applauded imo.

Bad experience here - one teacher rubbish but told me everything was rosy and lovely, other teacher better and called a spade a spade. Also the 3 day teacher appeared to be the one doing all the planning and had no time for anything.

To be fair if the 3 day teacher had been 5 days, she'd still have been rubbish so perhaps a good thing to actually have someone good for the 2 days......

It's pretty common.

My DD had two teachers in year R, it actually worked out great because when one was off sick the other would cover so they got a teacher they knew rather than a supply. Both teachers had different strengths so they each taught different bits of the curriculum meaning DD got better teaching in each area.

That's just a rubbish teacher, nothing to do with the job share aspect!

DD2 had split teachers in YrR and yr2 years and DD1 had split teachers in yr1 and yr2. Defintiely a positive experience for both DDs and it didn't seem to have any impact on their progress vs a single teacher. They also have various other teachers for music, pe, languages, art so used to a range of faces!

this happened to us last year and I actually think it worked out very well. Both had particular strengths though were good all rounders and both communicated well with us. I was worried before it started but if they're good communicators it can be a very positive thing. Plus, I liked DD getting used to having a couple of class teachers as a bit of an intro to the many, many teachers of Y7!
