From grammar to grammar??

Hi all,

DH & I are considering moving from the South East to possible North East, although not 100% at the moment, moves considered due to our work.

The only hold back for us is that DD is in year 8 of an all girls grammar, she loves it and is doing really well.

Would we be able to request she attends another grammar school in the new area? Or is it a case of applying to the education board in the area and they slot her in??

I don't think there are many (any) state grammar schools in the north east.

Have you got a specific area in mind?

PatriciaHolm · 04/07/2022 12:17

She would need to pass the grammar test for the new school - the pass wouldn't transfer.

But yes, once you get above Lincolnshire I don't think there are any in the north east.

You would need there to be a grammar in reasonable distance, then would need a space there and then be top of their admissions criteria, whether that is by score or by distance. It is likely to be tricky unfortunately.

It took me 30 seconds to confirm what I thought- there aren’t any
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_grammar_schools_in_England

there may be schools with grammar in their name but actually were forcibly turned independent some years ago.
that all said, with the hugely cheaper cost of living in the NE perhaps one or the independents will be worth looking at

Sorry if that link does not work but it shows that the most northerly grammar school
is in Skipton, which is not quite north east

Monsterathai · 04/07/2022 18:21

There's Ripon Grammar north of Skipton, but it's North Yorkshire rather than North East.

Narwhalelife · 04/07/2022 22:59

Thanks all.

Crikey, I didn’t realise that grammar schools were not nationwide, can’t move for them in the south.

More thinking to do

Bear in mind that in non-grammar areas, you get some pretty strong comprehensives. Look at the top end of results - if there's a set's-worth of kids getting 8/9s, then it probably doesn't make much difference to your child that there are also kids getting lower grades.

ChnandlerBong · 05/07/2022 09:22

OP - grammars haven't been nationwide for over 40 years! You can't move for them in the south is also incorrect -large swathes of the south are as unserved by grammars as the North East......

Frazzled2207 · 05/07/2022 11:13

Indeed it is a London, Kent and limited number of other places “thing”

LIZS · 05/07/2022 11:15

Not even universal in the South - Kent, Essex, Bucks, Parts of outer London. Lots of schools by "grammar" names are independent.
