My DD is 7. She could do with practicing her maths a bit over the summer. Can anyone recommend a good app that kids enjoy playing? She loved teach tojr monster to read so I was hoping for some thing she would be equally keen on but maths based.

Maths seeds is okay. Topmarks and ict games are also good.

Ask her school ...they might have platform,so they use and know

Sumdog? Graphics underwhelming but it seems good.

I agree that Maths Seeds is really good. My son loves Prodigy maths but he spends more time exploring it than doing the actual maths.

Not an app but my kids do kumon, when my eldest started she was slightly behind schools expected level, one year on she's working at a year ahead. Youngest is 6 months ahead.

Do they enjoy kumon or is it something you have to force them to do? I’ve heard very mixed reviews and a lot of people say it’s incredibly repetitive and boring.

Best way to practice maths at home to keep the interest alive, is not to do work books or formal schemes such as Kumon. Times tables are a priority at that age if you want to do something at home, lots of games/apps online (Beat the Button is loved by the children I teach). Also playing board games that involving maths such as counting/working out money in Monopoly etc and baking/cooking (weighing/measuring ingredients).

White Rose one minute maths app - it's free and good for number facts

Teach your monster also has a maths app out too

Elephant learning is excellent for maths.

Thank you. Lots of ideas to look at.

@OperaStation surprisingly they do! My eldest has asd and is demand avoidant, she hated still does homework, reading etc but has no problem with kumon.

They started her on easy sums to gain her confidence, which was very low, over the months she became more confident and now is working at a year ahead of her class. I tried all apps such as freckle, TT rock stars, numbots etc.

In my experience, apps are great for getting your kids to fiddle on your phone and they're very good at debiting your bank card every month but little else.

I remember trying it with my youngest but they would get far more out of fiddling on a screen than ever learning Maths. This was evident when I put a related homework sheet in front of them after a few sessions on Komodo - they didn't have a clue and were clearly just pressing all the buttons until they got the answer! Subscription cancelled and we cracked out the books.

That's the funny thing about technology. Schools often rush to adopt it and use it in the classroom but I'm not sure it makes anyone's lives any easier and the kids don't seem to learn as much from it. It's like it's just a colourful distraction.

depends on the quality of the app imo. DD1 learnt to read using Teach Your Monster. It was during lockdown so certainly can’t have been her nursery doing it!

The white rose one is excellent and it is free.

Have a look at Dragonbox apps. They are more about problem solving rather than facts but get children thinking. They are quite expensive (about £6 each) but I really rate them.
