Has anyone's child left y6 early?

Eldest DC finish their GSCEs and A levels May/ June next year, younger DC will be in year 6.

I have an opportunity to take 6 weeks leave from work in June and July (can't get the time off in school summer hols sadly!) so am looking into taking them travelling to Asia for 6 weeks.

This would mean DC finishing yr 6 in June - has anyone done this and what are the options? I guess permission for so long off won't be granted by the school (even though the trip will be educational!) so would I need to deregister him and homeschool (abroad!)?

My year 6 would miss his yr 6 production show at a local theatre, plus leavers prom, days out with school, swimming etc plus his secondary school transition day and a camp they are running for new joiners.

These are magic memories for them and I wouldn't voluntarily make him miss them.

I’d do it. What they would gain from such a trip outweighs missing the last primary school things.

Although I’m probably biased as my year 6 child current hates school. He was quite enthusiastic about learning up until about Feb, at which point he was completely ready for SATs and there seemed to be little new.

He claims they’ve learnt nothing new since SATs. They do have their residential trip coming up, plus a play, plus sports day, plus they had a trip….my DC hates most of this enforced fun, but then he’s a miserable child!

You won’t fit in 6 weeks before school holidays as gcse go on to late June.
I’d also worry not bothered would change to bothered when they realise missing end of term events.
But logistically removing from school roll 30/6 so effectively giving your yr 6 3 weeks extra off school shouldn’t cause you any issues - no fines as they aren’t enrolled in school. Home educating can take any form.

Last main gcse exam physics was 23/6 this year but some had history or statistics 27/6. I think you are imagining GCSEs and A level finish much earlier.

People saying stuff like this - do you not think they will be making much better memories traveling through Asia?

I personally don't remember anything about my last few weeks of Y6. But I remember all the holidays I was taken on as a child.

You think swimming is a 'magic memory'?

Life is way too short OP, absolutely go.

We did something similar when our eldest was in year 5. We’d originally thought of taking them out of school for a couple of months, but we’re told we’d need to de-register, with the off-chance they wouldn’t get back into the same school/class when we got back.

We cut it down to leave three weeks before the end of the summer term. The school obviously couldn’t authorise the absence but were verbally very supportive and we didn’t get fined. As the kids had such good attendance up to then it didn’t even trigger a letter from the attendance officer. (Unlike the start of the next term when one had two days sick in the first few days. That took him down to 60% so the attendance officer had to slap our wrists.)

It was an awesome experience. If your kids are happy to miss the end of school stuff then you should leap at the chance. You’ll never get the opportunity to spend that amount of concentrated quality time all together as a family again.

I’m quite jealous.

My daughter's primary school did bugger all in year 6 as all exams for senior schools were over by the October. One of the mums took her son out at Easter as their daughter was taking GCSEs and would finish early, so they went on a family trip for the whole summer. Great idea! ( I had taken my daughter out at the end of Year 5 as she moved to an all through school and got to have a great time in year 6 )

Also my cousin's daughter took her son out at the summer half term and they went round the US for nearly 3 months.

Go for it!

I would do this. Tbh, the entire Y6 has been pretty useless. We live in a grammar area so dc needed to know the Y6 curriculum by early September to take the 11+. Your dc will miss some secondary transition stuff but no big deal in the grand scheme of things. I don't think that losing your primary place will affect your secondary school place.

Just to clarify- By homeschooling I actually mean learning through travel and experiencing new stuff like different cultures, food, environments rather than sitting doing maths worksheets which is what DC seems to do at school!

That’s called a holiday
I am not saying don’t do it but don’t try to pretend it’s home schooling.
The other thing I would say is that my DD is 17 now and she still talks about the fun she had at the end of Y6 after SATS. They did loads of fun stuff and had an absolutely brilliant time, I was really upset for DS that he missed all that due to Covid
