My great-niece has her 4th birthday coming up soon, and she loves books. I am looking to buy her some books with prompts/cues etc as a first reader, if anybody can help, please?

My children at that age loved the Bunny and Bee books for learning to read.
They all begin with:
"Here is a house
A house in a tree
the house is the home
Of Bunny and Bee"
and is full of simple words, rhyme and repetition.
"Noisy Nights" was their favourite.

Thank you Margaret, they sound perfect. I have bought her the full set of Beatrix Potter and the Complete AA Milne which she loves being read to her, so this help with the next stage of her being able to read them herself.

I don't know if they are still available but my DC loved Usbourne's Apple Tree Farm books. They have a simple sentence at the top of each page for the child to read and a longer couple of sentences for an adult to read. Plus the yellow duck to find on each page.

The Songbird Series by Julia Donaldson, it is phonetic (Stage 1-6 is available). If you want her to learn to read. All of mine learnt to read with this and then Biff and Kipper, before starting school.
However, I think I bought the whole series for around 20 pounds years ago and it seems a lot more expensive now. Our school also use it now in Reception.

Usbourne do a good set of phonics books about fat cat and toad who builds a road etc. Julia donaldsons songbirds collection is also good. The jolly phonics big book is great to learn the sounds, we did this with my DD at 4 and she sped through her phonics once she got to school. The key is to check how they will teach phonics at her proposed school and make sure you understand it too and use the same scheme, things like how to pronounce the phonic sounds e.g. rrr not 'ruh' for R.

Thank you - both her parents read to her, and finding the yellow duck each will be an added incentive for her.

We also liked the Apple Tree Farm books.
Some of the Dr Seuss books are good for that age too such as 'one fish two fish' or 'Hop on Pop'
