There are lots of online courses that are pretty good.

Do get a keyboard with blank keys though.

You want a copy of Mavis Beacon (or similar)

You only really want to do 1 up to a maximum of 2 hours a day.

Then it's just very regular practice once you know where all the keys are in your head.

You don't need that. I learned to touch type very young using an old computer. I was shown where to put your fingers (L: ASDF / R: JKL;) and to practise.

I did, now I'm over 104 and it's my job to type fast.

You don't need a course. You just need this www.typingclub.com/ and to practise at your own pace.

Once you know where to put your fingers and which fingers are for which keys you only need practise.

I got a data entry job during uni which was like being paid to practise. Now I get up to £50 an hour taking notes and typing.

No one wants professional touch typing qualifications because places will just do their own test and if you pass it you're pretty much in.

I learned around that age. Touch typing is a great skill that really helps you expedite all tasks in your life.

IMO everyone should do a typing course. Typing should be taught at school. Too many people still type using just a couple of their fingers.

I learned to type properly many years ago, and I wouldn't recommend an intensive typing course for a child, or for anyone for that matter. Once you learn which fingers to use for which keys, it's really just practice from then on.

Practice frequent letter combinations such as tion, ough, etc. and common words like and, the etc. by repeating them over and over and over.

I didn't know you could get keyboards with blank keys - we used to have a cover to put over ours when I learned.

Get him to learn how to type "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog" without looking, over and over.

I remember back in the 90s having a v-tech toy word processor which did typing lessons, I loved that thing and type really well now. It's a very useful skill as means I can type notes while in meetings vastly reducing my admin and making me more efficient.

To stop them learning how to type using 2 fingers.

People use keyboards at a younger age than in the past so a older primary school children/young secondary school children should learn the skill.

Touch typing it is quicker, more efficient and comfortable. (She says as she touch types this.)

DD learned to touch type at 10 using English Type Junior - she's severely dyslexic and it's specially designed for dyslexic kids. englishtype.com/junior-type/

Course was brilliant, and inexpensive. She's used a laptop for school ever since and being able to touch type made a big difference.

DD learnt as she has hypermobile fingers which makes writing by hand very painful and difficult. She's also very dyslexic so moving to a laptop means she has spell check and a read-back programme.

To be honest, I don't know why they don't drop teaching cursive etc in schools and just teach them all to touch type as early as possible. Much more useful skill these days.

I taught myself, as PPs state, it's just practice once you know where to keep your fingers.
