Hard to get into York Catholic schools?

Hello,

We are moving to York this summer and want our children to go to a good Catholic school. We are looking at St. George's and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs with interest, but can anyone tell me if they are oversubcribed? How hard is it to get a place when applying in the summer? My DD will be going into Year 1. Also, do all of the Catholic primaries feed into All Saint Secondary? Is it an automatic admission if you come from a Catholic primary? Thanks in advance for any info! This is a very frustrating process as we still haven't found a home to buy and are worried about finding a house close to one of the aforementioned schools and not being able to get it.

Not hard to get into St George's at all - loads of good primaries in the area so not particularly competitive. As far as I know it's not hard to get into All Saints either. I haven't heard anyone stressing about schools in York - most are really good so it's not a cut-throat competition.

Are you Catholics? Are your children baptised?

TheForgetfulCat · 12/04/2022 12:23

I don't know about primaries but for what it's worth a number of non Catholic children seem to get into All Saints each year without a great deal of bother. That leads me to assume that places for Catholic children aren't oversubscribed.

As pps say most York schools are good so generally it's possible to get a school you are happy with even if not your absolute 1st choice.

That’s great, thank you. I was just worried because I had called Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and they said that their reception class was full which led me to assume that my dd might not be able to get into year 1 this autumn. I was hoping to find a home close enough to a school so we could walk, but is it a big pain to drive/drop off to schools like St George’s or OLQOM?

And yes we are Catholic and my children are baptised.

We have a kid at St. george’s. It’s undersubscribed (we have 23 in the class) and the catchment area is much bigger than what’s posted via the local authority so kids come in from all over. It’s easy to drive there and traffic and drop off etc isn’t too awful

We didn’t have to show proof of baptism etc. The school is quite a bit smaller than others and doesn’t have a PTA (in case that’s important) another popular local catholic primary is St Wilfreds

All Saints is v popular; coming from a catholic feeder primary school definitely gives you more ‘points’ along with being catholic. This year 7 intake for this September is oversubscribed, but rom
ehat i’ve read on local fb groups, it’s a big year group across the city
